About Performance Saddles
Performance saddles are narrower than the models designed for shorter ride comfort. They're intended for riders who have a committed riding style with weight on hands and feet so they're narrower and lighter. High tech padding materials and flexible body designs keep your pressure points comfortable and lightweight chassis components keep the weight down. Most have some kind of ergonomic design to reduce pressure on nerves and allow unrestriced blood flow to your sensitive areas. Womens models have a wider design to suit their naturally wider pelvis. Saddle widths vary across the ranges from narrow (upto 130mm), medium (upto 138mm) to wide (upto 146mm). Narrower saddles are the popular choice for longer distance riders as they do not cause the hips to be placed in an unnatural position. Wider saddles will often feel comfortable initially due to their greater surface area but then progressively decrease in comfort as the miles increase, the correct choice of saddle is a case of getting the balance between initial comfort and overall comfort.
About the Brooks England brand
The Brooks bike saddle story started way back in 1865, a young man of just 19 years of age was said to have bought 'one of those new-fangled velocipedes' which was fitted with a wooden saddle, this proved excruciating. As luck would have it his father made leather saddles for horses, so the young man known as John Boultbee Brooks set to work in his fathers workshop designing and developing a comfortable saddle from leather.
The rest they say is history....
Brooks experience in saddle making goes right back to the beginning - back to the period of solid tyres - and is unequalled by any other house in the world.
That said, they recognise the fact that they cannot rely on their past history alone, so they still build saddles with the same attitude as when they started, 'quality first', both in materials and manufacture. The testament to this is that there are still saddles in active use today, made many many years ago.

Medium: for all road, mtb, trekking and touring saddles
Large: for all city, transport and heavy duty saddles
The B17 is in their touring and trekking range so the medium size should suit.
What is the significance of the sizes for the saddle cover? Do different saddles require different sizes?
Answers
The large cover is too big for my medium-sized seat. Unless you have a very wide seat, I'd go for the medium. If you have a narrow racing seat then I doubt the medium will be small enough.
The cover is made of hardy material, so an ill-fitting cover can be quite uncomfortable to sit on. I don't think it would be much fun for a cyclist wearing lycra. The size/shape doesn't adjust well, despite having a drawstring.
