One review said it doesn't work when it rains. Is this true? Surely bike computers are designed with that in mind.

Rain should have no effect. You just need both batteries to be in good order. It is weather resistant as you would expect. I would not want to leave it under a running hose but UK weather should be fine

I have 2 Velo 5 computers - one on each bike. I lost one of the computer units as I failed to click it into place properly before a ride, and so now I move the remaining computer between bikes depending on which one I use. I am thinking of getting a Velo 8 computer, but don't know if I will be able to use on both bikes, or if the base unit/sensor/wiring setup is different. Any ideas?

I've coiled mine up now so can't measure it but unless you have a very small bike - no it's not long enough. If you did want the sensor on the back wheel, how about mounting the computer on the top tube? It would need a bit of work on the bracket unless you can read sideways.

I would say yes from looking at the instructions. There is na table of tyre sizes and settings and the smallest ones are 2 x 1.75 with a setting of 935 (I think this means 935 mm circumference) and then 14 x 1.50 and 14 x 1.75 with settings of 102 and 106 (meaning 1020 and 1060 mm circumference) so should be possible to programme in 100 for a circumference of 1000 mm

Answer:
You should set the units as the very first thing. I think the only thing to do is to clear the cycle computer - you will loose your total distance and all the settings you made in the beginning. But you have to push the set and the mode buttons at the same time - then you can change the units by pushing the mode button. When the units are the right ones, then push the set button - then the rest of the setup procedure follow

To change the two you need to select the distance display on the unit (press the button until it displays the distance in k) and then poke the tiny 'set' button on the back of the unit with something suitable pointy like a biro and you should be able to change between K and Mph. Changing to Mph will automatically change the time to a 12hr clock.

It is the first thing to set after you reset the computer by holding down both buttons. Then press the main button to select miles or km then the tiny set button to advance to the next setting. But this means you will have to redo the calibration as well. If it is set to mph the clock will be 12 hr instead of 24 hr. Here is a link to the instruction sheet: http://tinyurl.com/2ufrr68
