Top Features of the Cervelo R5 VWD Frameset 2012
One of the lightest frames available. The R5 VWD is built to Cervelo's high stiffness and strength standards using highly complex layups and technology to provide exceptional efficiency, torsional rigidity and calculated vertical compliance.
- Road
- Frame Material: Carbon
- Wheel Size: 700c (622)
- Fork Material: Carbon
- Brake Type: Caliper
- Unisex
- Cable Routing: External
Second Generation Squoval Tubing Profile
Developed at Cervelo's west coast American test facility, the Squoval tubing profile has undergone further development to reduce weight and increase stiffness where needed.
- The square profile deploys mass on either side of the center to counter side to side flex
- Rounded corners safely transfer torsional forces to prevent stress rises
- Smartwall engineering places strategic variations in wall thickness for optimised weight and strength. Carbon strength and stiffness depend on the size, shape, material and direction of each of the 300+ carbon components in Cervelo carbon frames.
Cervelo Optimised 1 3/8" Tapered Steerer Tube
Cervelo conducted extensive Research and development to create the ideal standard for non-aero frames.
- Smaller sizes result in reduced stiffness at the same weight.
- Larger Sizes reduce comfort and offer a lower frontal impact strength.
Ultra Thin Seat Stays
A pioneering Cervelo Carbon frame technology, Ultra thin seat stays offer vertical compliance for reduced road vibration and smoothness over long distances. Advanced engineering and lay-up techniques ensure high strength at a reduced weight.
BBright Bottom Bracket Shell
The BBright standard employs asymmetrical cup sizes to maximise strength and stiffness, performance and compatibility.
- An 11mm Increase in the Non-drive side shell allows for a wider chainstay, seat tube and down tube junction.
- The narrow drive side allows compatibility with a wide range of chainring sizes and a lower q-factor for pedalling efficiency.
- A 30mm axle reduces weight and increases stiffness.
Single Bend Cable Routing
By removing bends and twists from the cable path, friction load is removed for crisp effortless shifting in all conditions.

About Road Frames
Road frames have come a long way in recent years with new advancements in technology and materials. Carbon fibre, aluminium and titanium are all widely used now as well as the more traditional steel tubesets. They all have their own advantages: aluminium offers good performance at a reasonable price, titanium offers ultimate performance at a premium price while carbon fibre offers superb comfort and performance at intermediate cost. It is not uncommon for the materials to be mixed to give the benefits of all the materials in one frame - a carbon fibre rear end on an aluminium frame, for example. Here at Wiggle we list a selection of road frames to suit most budgets, from the affordable aluminium frames right up to the technically advanced carbon and titanium frames from leading manufacturers.
About the Cervelo brand
Cervélo Cycles saw the light of day in 1995 when 2 engineers, Phil White and Gérard Vroomen, decided to take the work they had been doing on developing faster Time Trial bikes to market. Already involved in bicycle and Human Powered Vehicle design since 1986, the turning point came when a top-ranked Italian pro cyclist approached Gérard to design the fastest possible Time Trial bike for him. The team was very enthusiastic about the bike, and so was almost everybody we showed it to. We were already personally involved in triathlon and road racing, and everywhere we went with the bike people asked us where they could get one. An important exception was the team’s bike sponsor, who was not yet ready to part with tradition. We drew the conclusion that if pro riders and athletes, both in the cycling and triathlon world, liked our design but the bike companies didn’t, our only option would be to start a company of our own. And so Cervélo Cycles was born!

Hope this helps.
The dealer I bought my R3 from ceased to be a dealer a few months after I bought my bike. But retaining proof of purchase, I am currently having a stress fracture of the bottom bracket sorted through another dealer.
All good really.
