Based around an 80-100mm travel suspension fork (Rockshox Reba RL), the unique geometry dispels any rumours that 29ers are unwieldy and boat like in their technical handling. This Cooker is fitted with a great mix of components from great brands such as SRAM, Truvativ, and Avid.

The Avid Elixir 7 provides the awesome stopping power you want when needed and the Rockshox Reba RL fork soaks up the lumps and bumps nicely. The front end of this Ti machine is handled with Cran Bros kit. Cobalt 1 and 2 parts adorn the steering area so precise handling and quality can be trusted with every turn.

Amazingly fun XC steed! The Cooker series was introduced last year. A rather delayed launched compared to most larger manufacturers who have been producing 29ers for a few years now at least. But, 2012 was 'The Year of the 29er', although I think that will be said in 2013 too! Charge don't rush things, but as a result the Cooker is a dialled and is a fine handling beast. More on that later. First though, the spec. Drivetrain Driven by SRAM's X9 groupset in a 2x10 setup suits the bike really well. Indeed where many brands would spec a better rear mech just to look good on paper, Charge have included X9 as a rear mech, chainset and shifters. Downgraded in areas that don't matter too much, like an X7 front mech and cassette. The groupset continues into the wheels with X7 hubs laced to WTB rims. I haven't used the wheels yet so will follow up on that later, but the drivetrain has so far been flawless. Braking Avid's Elixir 7's stop the bike reasonably quickly. The feel ergonomic at the lever, but I'm not so far very impressed. Firstly, the contact point when the levers are pulled are rather...soft. I think this feeling must come from the pads sitting so close to the disc. The front brake feels much better than the rear which I have bled many times to improve the feeling but can't. Fairly squishy as if there is air in the line, but I can't find any. Lastly, the brake pads are terrible. The rear pads wore out in around 7 miles. Sure it was wet and sandy, but 7 miles! The front pads after 40 miles are almost gone too. Having replaced these with Clarks pads, longevity seems to have been improved. Components Charge have opted for Crank Brothers Cobolt Bars, Stem and Seatpin. The standard flat bar has a nice sweep and generally feels comfortable, but I swapped it out for a riser bar. The stem seems stiff and good quality, but why have they used torx bolts instead of allen bolts? Torx allow more wrenching before they strip, when compared to allen bolts but annoyingly, this means you've got to make sure you have allen keys and torx keys in your pack now. This annoyance extends to the saddle clamp on the seatpost too. Further distress was with the seatpost length. I'm 6ft tall and bought a large frame size so was disappointed to find the seatpost was way too short for me. I'm sure taller riders would be buying this size of frame. I believe the post must have been 330mm or similar, so I swapped it for a cheap 400mm post just so I could get riding. Tyres & Grips The WTB Prowler tyres look the nuts with their skin-coloured side walls, and boy are they light. The weight seems to be in the lack of any sort of protection. I punctured on my first couple of miles and shortly after tore a large slit in the side wall. Perhaps they're too light? In terms of grip, on the one or two spots of hard-pack I've found, they eem like they might be a good summer tyre. In the bog, sand and mud they've experienced in their first 100 miles, I know they aren't much of a mud tyre. I don't think they're pretending to be though, so we won't mark them down here. Frame Detail The beauty of Ti frames should be their simplicity and ability to look great, no matter their age or the bikes' condition. The Cooker should look stunning for years. It's natural Ti finish looks great, cleans easily and despite not running a chainstay protector or cable rub stickers, the frame is looking immaculate too. The frame looks largely traditional, with a couple of signs of the 21st century. Namely the ovalised downtube that starts with a vertical oval by the headtube, reinforced with a large gusset, then transforming in shape to become a horizontal oval by the bottom bracket which helps the bike feel stiff when dropping the hammer. The incredibly butch looking headtube is very tall, but this suits me as I am evolving the bike to feel a little more 'trail-oriented' than an out-and-out race weapon where you might like to swap spacers around and ensure the stem is in a negative position. Handling Man it's fast! It climbs hills like a spider monkey on acid. Despite a period of lower fitness levels, this bike does allot for your ego. The 29" wheels just gobble up the terrain and eat roots and small ledges as snacks. With the long head tube and my addition of the riser bar, I felt like the flat bar supplied is a very good choice. I've now positioned the front end slightly too high for the steepest of climbs, but that's nothing the removal of a few spacers won't solve. While out of the saddle attacking a climb or burning along the flat, side to side flex feels nominal. Every ounce of pedal power feels like it's propelling you forward. That's a feeling we all relish. It's here when seated you feel the magic of titanium come to life. It's stiff, but at the same time offers a unique feeling of bump absorption. It's not flex...it just soaks it up. Only when you ride a Titanium bike will you really know. When turning down hill, the slightly higher front end (especially matched with my riser bars) give the hard tail a nimble and lean feel. Slow and technical seems easy and you quickly forget you're riding a 29er. When the decent opens up, the bike rolls fast and doesn't hesitate with small ledges, roots and rocks. Remember, it is a hardtail, so it's never going to feel quite as lively on the downs as your 160mm full suspension bike, but it does feel fun. You just need to stay on your toes and help the bike around a little. I feel some of the lack-luster maneoverability on the fast downs may be improved with a bit of added stiffness at the front end. This isn't down to the frame, but the Reba forks using a conventional 9mm QR. In a time where many bikes are being supplied with 15mm QR forks, I feel this could have been a big plus when Charge came to specing the bike. Verdict A fun-loving 29er Ti hardtail that is ripe for spec tweaking and riding as you see fit. Charge have clearly thought about the spec, but at the same time some evident cost cutting has been achieved in some areas to afford the £3,000rrp. The ride quality and looks however, justify any action Charge has taken in delivering their flagship 29er. 15 March 2013

No need to look at any other 29er; this is the ONE What a great bike! Really surprised how quick and nimble this bike is (even at very slow speeds weaving through tight trees). This bike will also fly over technical sections like they are not there (feels a bit like cheating). Don’t even bother looking at any other 29ers and forget 26” wheels this bike is the ONE! And of course great customer service and fast delivery from Wiggle 12 December 2012
