About Cyclocross Bikes

Cyclocross bikes are similar to road bike, they are lightweight, with narrow tyres and drop handlebars. However, they also share characteristics with mountain bicycles in that they utilize knobby treaded tyres for traction, and cantilever style brakes for the clearance needed due to muddy conditions. They have to be lightweight because competitors need to carry their bicycle to overcome barriers or slopes too steep to climb in the saddle. The sight of competitors struggling up a muddy slope with bicycles on their shoulders is the classic image of the sport, although un-ridable sections are generally a very small fraction of the race distance. Cross bikes also make good winter bikes or commuters, their frames have plenty of clearance which allows for mudguards, while the upright angles make them agile around town, meaning you can hit the trails at the weekend and then fit some road tyres and commute on them during the week.

Great way to get back into cycling I haven't sat on a bike for 20 years much less ridden one so was looking for a nice simple bike to get me started. The Filter seemed to tick all the boxes. So went for it and have enjoyed it from the day it arrived. Sorry but I don't have anything to compare it against performance wise but is fast enough for me. Where I live doesn't have any hills but is windy so the gearing does get lots of use and works great. I would recommend this bike, I am sure I will get years of fun out of it! 10 November 2012

fantastic value for the price this was another great purchase from wiggle I was looking for a commuter and winter trainer, was just came across this at 50% off, it was a no brainier, great frame and a good group set,along with disc brakes it makes it ideal for winter,if a little weighty.. if I had paid the full list price I would probably be disappointed but to pay only £650 I am very very pleased.. the only let down was it having a cross style crank rather than a compact 29 October 2012

Good allround bike, but it is for cyclocross Bought a a winter and comfortable steel framed bike. Glad of my purchase but some things i have learned. Good. Flexible and more comfortable than my carbon road bike. But it is a cyclocross bike after all so be aware Great off road. I use a Dawes Galaxy in places that would surprise people but this is more sure footed and feels less breakable. Use on safe down hill tracks Observations. Had to change the crankset to a compact for the hills. No big deal and to be expected so some extra money. Tyres needed changed as i do more on the road. But they are there for the winter, which is good, it is a cyclocross. Frame is quite large for a large, be aware Steel may be the deal but comfort is less than i expected next to me Dawes Galaxy dont buy for comfort alone Every one mentions comfort but it is not that yielding. It is a cyclocross trail bike and needs to be able to put the power down. Overall. It is a bit more comfortable than my carbon, but not much, loads better than my aluminium crosstrail. Which is why i bought it with the drops etc Does what it says on the tin. Tracks and cyclocross is what it is designed for. And, it does this well plus some road use with my panniers on. Well made, not that heavy, same as my old galaxy!, good kit i,d likely buy again, well i have kept it 26 October 2012

Perfect for commuting Bought this for my winter commute and it's perfect. Disc brakes are a bit tricky to set up but once you've sussed them, you stop on a sixpence. Overall ride is comfy over the rough roads even with the 25mm tyres I added and also pretty fast and tight too. It is a touch on the heavy side if you're used to a lightweight road bike but hey if your going to add a rack for a pannier, who cares about a few extra grams? It just means I go quicker down hill but now I've got the brakes to stop! 17 October 2012

At 5' 11" I appear to be in between sizes Medium & Large; which would you suggest as the safer bet, and could I get away with either?

For others who might read this as a bit late. I am 6ft dead short legs long back getting old less than super flexible but not bad. Had XL bikes in the garage, due to deals and discounts always a bit big. Seat low and stem reduced. But livable. The apex is a large and is, in my opinion half way between a large and extra large. So as always depends on you your style your flexibility etc. I could have managed a medium at 6ft. But large seemed a safer bet. Notice no XL in the range. I always buy a bigger bike stupid of me but get a zero offset saddle and a shorter stem in my case 40mm shorter and it is a medium. Not a lot of money for the flexibility

I am a little over 5 feet 9 inches and comfortable with the Medium size. There is further adjustment available on the seat pin but even flipping the stem has not raised the bars significantly - so, at 5 feet 11 inches, you may end up with a slightly more aggressive riding position.

A key consideration may be to reflect on the size of cycle you usually like. If you prefer to ride something on the smaller side, enjoying plenty of crossbar clearance and a more lively ride, I might be inclined towards the Medium size. If you usually like a bigger frame, with perhaps steadier ride, the large may suit you better.

By way of comparision, having carefully checked the measurements, the set up I have with the Medium-framed Filter Apex is identical to that I have for my 56 cm Genesis Day One.

Although cyclocross i have gatorskins 28mm on it and is good on the road and light touring possible not sure about heavy touring as not done this but need to check out as it is not designed for this and might not be suitable. Its all about how it flexes, shimmers and give.

Fitting a different wheel

I would like to know if it is possible to fit a standard rear 700 /23 tyre / wheel to the bike to be able to swap over to a turbo trainer. I am not sure if a standard wheel will fit because of the width of the reas stays and the disc brake fittings. If it does fit, I realise that I won't be able to use the rear brake.
