Two stage quick release skewer, using a split lever design to improve clamping force and to improve ease of use. Made from 6061-t6 aluminium with a chromoly axle skewer for durability.
Quick release skewers are rods which are threaded at one end, with a cam assembly on the other. This combines to make a lever operated cam system. The quick release mechanism was invented in 1927 by Tullio Campagnolo, who was an Italian bicycle racer. He was frustrated when he needed to repair a flat tyre during a race, the weather had turned cold, and his hands were numb, so he could not operate the wingnuts which retained the wheel. He had been well-placed prior to the puncture, but lost valuable time, so decided to develop a quick release skewer system which enables simple wheel removal in seconds.

There are loads of quick-release skewers available, but very few are anywhere near as good as the ones you get with any Shimano hubs or wheels. These skewers from Crank Brothers have a genuine low leverage advantage though.
The two half-levers close securely as one piece in the conventional way, with a nice broad platform to stop the bruising your hand. The cunning bit is that you can open each lever sequentially, effectively halving the effort needed - not essential, but you appreciate them when you're knackered.
They come in some funky colours, and at 124g they're no heavier than conventional sets.
