1991:THE CRUD CATCHER
Pre-CRUD riders were in the habit of cutting up plastic bottles and zip-tying them to the downtube.
I wanted something that looked a little more stylish on my brand new Diamondback. So I looked in the yellow pages and found a “tool designer”.
I didn't know what it meant, or what he did, but I went along to see him anyway, and he hooked me up and designed the tool for the first crud catcher. I don't remember his name, but I’d like to meet him again and thank him for setting me on the path.
This is the lighter, skinnier cousin of the original Crud Catcher. Sold as a front/rear set and with the same stainless steel fittings on the rear guard and the simple but effective O-ring fastening on the front guard, it's just as simple to set up as the original. the light weight and sleeker lines will perfectly suit any pared-down race styling you might be hoping to acheive, but obviously the trade-off for that is you're going to get a bit muddier. But to be perfectly honest, if you feel the need for speed, you won't be haninging around long enough to worry about a bit of peripheral splashing.
Easy to use, lighter and racer version of the original Crud Catcher
The Crud Catcher was invented for mountain bikes, where full mudguards could jam the wheel in really muddy off-road conditions. The Racepac guards, sold as a front/rear set, work on the same principle, fitting to the downtube and seatpost, but are lighter and narrower.
The sleeker lines will suit any pared-down race styling you might be hoping to achieve. The trade-off is you're going to get a bit muddier, but if you feel the need for speed you won't be hanging around long enough to worry about a bit of peripheral splashing.
The fittings for the rear guard are stainless steel, so shouldn't rust, and are easy to fit to virtually any bike, while the front attaches with a simple-but-effective O-ring fastening.
