A rear derailleur is a mechanism that allows you to change and choose a sprocket/cog on the cassette on your rear wheel. The derailleur moves on a horizontal plane as you look at the rear wheel from above.
The ability to change gear conveniently and rapidly allows you to continue cycling in an efficient manor. A rear derailleur gives you a choice of gearing and the ability to use them through a gear lever.
Your choice of rear derailleur is based upon the gear levers your bike has. The cable is pulled in different amounts by different brands. So if you have Campagnolo gear levers then use a Campagnolo rear derailleur for the best compatibility. Also make sure you chose a rear derailleur suitable for the number of sprockets on your cassette.
