About the CycleOps brand

Cycleops are world famous for producing high quality cycle trainers. However, the company origins weren’t in cycling, believe it or not they started with producing curtain rods! The story goes that the Graber brothers sold their window products company and needed something to do. They experimented in their garage and came up with a best-selling bike rack. In 1989, Chris and Sara Fortune purchased the company when it was selling 80,000 bike racks a year. In 1990, a high-end brand of bike rack was launched, branded as “Saris.” Today Saris is a leading supplier to the bicycle industry in over 30 countries. The company expanded in 1999 by acquiring the Cycleops brand of bike trainer. As usual they set out to improve on the design and by 2001 they created a new trainer frame and in 2002 they launched the world’s first progressive resistance Cycleops magnetic trainer. It was in 2001 that they heard about a hub that could measure power output and they jumped at the chance to bring this product to cyclists. They bought the company that invented Powertap and started a new round of Cycleops cycling innovations.

Rolling on Steel First of all, yes I do understand this roller is made of aluminium...but rolling on steel sounded catchier! So anyway, I had been riding a lesser roller owned by a friend, every now and then, for a few months and had been negatively dissapointed by the noise and tyre wear! I had even been riding another, older, PVC cycleops roller and I have to say this one beats them both by a million miles! This roller is quiet, dissipates heat a lot faster and is very very stable. I was doing sprints of up to 60km/h on them and had no bounce! And mind you, I'm not a roller old timer! I managed to reach cadences of over 120rpm without having my parents complain that I was destroying the wooden floor! The rollers did slide a little back but by less than 4 inches during a 1 hour ride! So besides being relatively light (my 60 year old mother flew it in from England), quiet (my fussy sound engineering brother hasn't complained yet), it was cheaper than other rollers in the market! Plus it can be upgraded with a resistance unit. Not bad! I have had them for only about a month but have yet to find a chink in it's steel armour (yes I know, aluminium!)! good quality; hard work. Check size first. Just received these as a present (not bought from Wiggle). Quite impressed with the build quality, they feel like they will last. I've never used rollers before, and I am finding it harder to balance than I expected, despite all the comments. More of a surprise was the resistance: even without the resistance unit (which I have, but have yet to try), I find the rollers present quite a considerable resistance; too much so, at least for my taste. I would like to be able to gently spin for extended sessions, but that doesn't seem possible, given the resistance. Mind you, that might also not turn the wheels fast enough to balance, so perhaps that's intended... So, lots of practice needed to master, but hopefully it will be worthwhile. Sizing: the rollers are adjustable, having a number of positions. On the largest position, it just about fits my "town bike", which has a 109cm wheelbase. If your bike has a considerably longer wheelbase, you might have difficulty. Tiny niggle: the cardboard box it comes in makes a nice storage solution. But if you leave it on the largest adjustable setting, it no longer quite fits in the box, sticking out by an inch or two. Very minor issue. As noted, Cycleops also sell a resistance unit, which seems hardly necessary, at least for me. There's also a fork-stand, which would seem to negate the whole point of rollers, but perhaps would be useful for e.g. a track bike. 24 September 2012

Excellent OK, so these may not look as "sexy" as the parabolic ones, but they are superb quality and very stable. The drums spins effortlessly and are a joy to ride. These are built to last - I guess that's why they come with a lifetime warranty. What more can I say? 03 September 2012

Have long since debated a turbo trainer but for all the cons I imagined for a turbo which ultimately always put me off I considered rollers and found myself with only one question I needed answering that would make the decision, is there enough resistance? Read a few reviews here and there and explored the price ranges and decided fairly quickly to opt for these! They set up really easily, and all you have to do then is lift the bike on and ride. Tyres definitely have to be up to pressure otherwise the bounce is very noticeable but otherwise a great bit of kit. There is plenty of resistance in these using the gearing of the bike without any additions. Keep it simple right? I started training with a HRM fairly recently and the rollers are a great environment to spin a consistent workout. Alot of people commented on the ease of use so here's my two pence worth. Its just like riding a bike and because anyone buying these will no doubt know how to ride a bike you'll pick it up in no time, within about 20 seconds or so I would imagine. After that you just have to get riding! Personally, I think they are a great tool, bring on winter, summer will be here in no time!! 21 August 2012

What's the longest wheelbase?

I'd like to use these rollers with my TT bike and also my touring bike. The touring bike has quite a long wheelbase - 111.5cm - is this going to fit?

My "town" bike has a 109cm wheelbase, and it just about fits ok on the largest roller setting.

So I think yours would be ok, but quite close.

Just over 8lbs. I recently put them into the luggage hold of a plane coming out to the Middle East and they arrived completely unscathed and didn't cost me a thing in excess luggage - they're great.
