About the CycleOps brand

Cycleops are world famous for producing high quality cycle trainers. However, the company origins weren’t in cycling, believe it or not they started with producing curtain rods! The story goes that the Graber brothers sold their window products company and needed something to do. They experimented in their garage and came up with a best-selling bike rack. In 1989, Chris and Sara Fortune purchased the company when it was selling 80,000 bike racks a year. In 1990, a high-end brand of bike rack was launched, branded as “Saris.” Today Saris is a leading supplier to the bicycle industry in over 30 countries. The company expanded in 1999 by acquiring the Cycleops brand of bike trainer. As usual they set out to improve on the design and by 2001 they created a new trainer frame and in 2002 they launched the world’s first progressive resistance Cycleops magnetic trainer. It was in 2001 that they heard about a hub that could measure power output and they jumped at the chance to bring this product to cyclists. They bought the company that invented Powertap and started a new round of Cycleops cycling innovations.

The Fluid2 now comes with a larger flywheel, which provides twice the inertia for improved and apparently more road-like feel. Tyre slippage is virtually non-existent and the clamping unit can deal with different axle lengths.

Featuring a new, larger flywheel the Fluid feels even more realistic with no biopacing in the lower gear ranges. Being fluid-dragged there's an inherent quietness in use, making this a good choice for those with unsympathetic neighbours. The Fluid shares the larger diameter roller with the Magneto and this virtually eliminated tyre slip when compared to the smaller diameter roller on the basic Mag unit...0verall, a safe and simple design that will allow out-of-the-saddle work from a stable platform.

Clean your tyres... ...before you ride. A small amount of winter grit embedded in mine caused a ring of abrasion around the spindle, and a coating of powdered steel on my tyre. Not that it matters so much, or that it's specific to this product, but I thought I'd point it out. This is a good, sturdy, compact trainer. It folds away nicely, it's very quiet (my bike makes more noise than it does) and it looks good. It was pretty easy to put together, and the bike can be mounted on it in seconds. I didn't like having to replace my skewer, as the one in they supply doesn't fit well into the recess on my frame, but it must be difficult providing something that fits universally. The liquid rotor provides a decent amount of resistance, there's very little tyre slippage and the unit is stable enough to get out of the saddle (though maybe not for a full-on blast). It's well built too, and really feels like it will last. 10 March 2010

Good first Turbo... Bought this after being unable to secure the Magneto version. Finally decided that this might be worth the extra (still great value compared with other online stores). Glad I went for this Fluid2. Quality is good, easy to set up and really very quiet. I use this in the gararge so noise isn't really an issue but you could easily use this indoors without causing too much disturbance. Took a bit of fine tuning to get the back wheel securely into the axle / skewer connectors on the trainer but, once set up, very stable. Haven't used a trainer before, so have nothing to compare this too. Sessions are hard work (not sure what I was expecting..?) but I'm seeing improvements already so I think this is a great way of keeping some fitness over the winter and keeping those skinny tyres off the ice! 09 January 2010

Quality trainer and pretty quiet This trainer gets it right. It is easy to set up and take down so it takes up little space when not in use. It is stable when set up and there is little noise made by the resistance unit, which is a nice feature if you live in an apartment. Since my home has hardwood floors, I put a rubberized mat under the trainer to dampen the vibration and with the mat, there is no vibration sound at all. The resistance unit works well with little or no slippage and it has a very natural feel to it. I've tried a couple different types of trainers but this one is the best of the lot. So far no complaints and I've had it over two years now and logged perhaps a thousand miles on it. 24 October 2009

Fuss free trainer The trainer arrived in just a few parts and was very easy to assemble. The lollypop lever that attaches to the bolt however, wouldn't scew together and required replacing, which was taken care of over night by the warranty agent. Not all skewer levers fit into the clamp but a skewer comes with the kit and fits perfectly. I fitted a spare wheel and training tyre to my bike so the relevant skewer is always ready. Once set up, which is easy, it is a piece of cake to slot the rear wheel into place, throw the bolt, lift the pressure lever and away you go 25 April 2013

According to the manual "yes", but I've never tried with mine. I would suggest it would be quite noisy with knobbly MTB tyres (it's very quiet with a normal road bike tyre). However, I know Continental sell a MTB specific 26" home trainer tyre which would be well worth getting - I have the road bike version and it's certainly quieter than a normal tyre and far more hard wearing.

no. I recommend you purchase the separate CycleOps riser block. You do get a wheel skewer so you can be sure the skewer sits nicely in the trainer mounts.

Classic Fluid 2 Turbo Trainer

I have had this trainer for a couple of years now and it is a good trainer however I am getting a very frustrating squeaking/creaking noise about 20mins into the session. This appears to be coming from where the skewer nut attaches to the trainer socket. I suspect it is something to do with the friction and heat build up and the rub is causing the noise. I've tried tightening up the skewer and even putting tape around the nut which stopped the noise until the friction burned the tape away. It isnt the bike as I don't have this problem on the road so it must be something to do with how the bike is connected to the trainer. Its getting so annoying I'm considering changing for another trainer. Any ideas?

If you aren't using the skewer supplied with the trainer I would recommend doing so as this is a proven design for working with the trainer without noise. If you are using the supplied skewer you should check to make sure that the frame is straight as it could be that the trainer is not gripping the bike evenly on both sides, causing a wobble. If the trainer is gripping securely and the bike can't move you shouldn't have any issues with friction.

Is there a Weight limit for CycleOps Fluid 2?

Hi, Is there a user weight limit on the Fluid 2? I am 6 foot 3 and 105 Kg. I realise I won't be able to leap of the saddle and power myself through the garage door but for steady seated training will it be ok?

Yes you can use this trainer with Cyclocross bikes. You may suffer some vibration if your tyres do not have a smooth central tread though so you may need to fit slick tyres.
