About the CycleOps brand

Cycleops are world famous for producing high quality cycle trainers. However, the company origins weren’t in cycling, believe it or not they started with producing curtain rods! The story goes that the Graber brothers sold their window products company and needed something to do. They experimented in their garage and came up with a best-selling bike rack. In 1989, Chris and Sara Fortune purchased the company when it was selling 80,000 bike racks a year. In 1990, a high-end brand of bike rack was launched, branded as “Saris.” Today Saris is a leading supplier to the bicycle industry in over 30 countries. The company expanded in 1999 by acquiring the Cycleops brand of bike trainer. As usual they set out to improve on the design and by 2001 they created a new trainer frame and in 2002 they launched the world’s first progressive resistance Cycleops magnetic trainer. It was in 2001 that they heard about a hub that could measure power output and they jumped at the chance to bring this product to cyclists. They bought the company that invented Powertap and started a new round of Cycleops cycling innovations.

Let's face it we all need aTurbo sometime ...an excellent well made turbo, with the added bonus of the handle bar control. It's runs quietly and is easy to set up. Don't falter buy one, even if you just have it to look at and decide it's better go out and ride your bike for real...no, seriously, it is a must have piece of kit for training...motivation is increased if you purchase one of the CycleOps dvds. 17 December 2009

solid no fuss trainer Good sturdy trainer, easy to set up and swift action to secure bike, allowing for removal very easily should you happen to fall lucky and snatch a dry and clear winter day. Shifter very useful, especially with broken wrist, enabling smooth resistance changing. Some slippage between tyre and roller at high resistance but not significant enough to interupt session. 05 November 2009

Basics good - let down by some details Basic frame solid and robust. Mag loading works OK (if a bit noisy). Let down by the plasic bits, especially the load adjusting lever (both on turbo and the handlebar remote controller). 25 February 2013

Good product This is a well made piece of kit, though I could not fit the replacement spine that is supplied for the rear wheel of my bike, it seems my bike is too old. I'm not sure yet what that means, I've been told that the one in my bike won't last too long on the trainer. The shifter does not seem to make much of a difference, and the instructions on setting it up are a little scant. But, all in all, I'm very pleased, these are small things. 09 January 2013

No, a knobbly mtb tyre would vibrate heavily and damage the bearings in the roller unit quickly. You will need a smooth tyre.

Yes, this will be fine with a 700, 622, 28" tyre, as long as it has a slick central band.

How do I change resistance?

I recently got one of these second hand but I can't seem to change the resistance at all. I can see that the lever on the shifter moves the D shaped bit at the bottom across but it doesn't seem to make much difference to the resistance - what am I doing wrong? Thanks.

On bike trainers, do the rear wheel axle "connectors" fit universally?

I am concerned that the devices that connect to the rear wheel axle to the trainer may not fit properly over the Tiagra gear thingy on the RHS of the rear axle. (Clearly I know little about bikes!) Cheers!

You remove the axle on your bike (easily done) and fit the one supplied. It took me all of 5 mins to do.

Answer:

The bike trainers are universal, they are designed to fit road and mtb, they are designed to hold the bike away from the frame leaving plenty of room to use the rear derailleur (the tiagra gear thingy :)).

I have the fluid 2 trainer from CycleOps and use the same quick release both on trainer and outside. Its a standard, fairly cheap quick release, nothing special and will work both inside and out.

It should fit the bolt on axle as you remove the axle from your bike and put in the one supplied. It should work easily.

Answer:

The trainer is supplied with a quick release for use with quick release type wheels. If you did wish to use a fixed wheel with solid axle you would need to look at specific track nuts to fit the trainer mount. You may find Tacx nuts would be suitable.
