The Oregon 550 and 550t are Garmin's first units to feature a built in camera. The Oregon 550 and 550t's 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera with 4x digital zoom automatically geotags each photo with the location of where it was taken, allowing you to mark, remember and navigate back to the exact spot in the future.
Once an Oregon 550 is connected via USB and a user is logged on to my.Garmin.com, myGarmin will detect Oregon's photos, simplify the selection and uploading processes and then store those photos on Picasa, a popular online photo sharing community for friends and families around the world. Also new to Garmin is the addition of the 3-axis tilt-compensated compass which will allow the unit to report an accurate heading even when the unit is not held in a level position.
The rugged Oregon 550 has a built-in DEM (digital elevation model) basemap that supports terrain shading and route elevation profiles to help you estimate terrain difficulty. The Oregon 550t comes preloaded with a European topographic map at 1:100k scale* with street level detail, elevation contours, points of interest, and land use descriptions.
The Oregon 550 and 550t provides an improved sunlight-readable touchscreen display. The high-sensitivity GPS receiver with HotFix™ satellite prediction helps to locate your position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. Both units support paperless geocaching, 3-D elevation perspective and come with a battery charger plus 2 rechargeable NiMH batteries; this will save you money and reduces waste as batteries get recharged.
With the Oregon 550 and 550t, you can share your waypoints, tracks, routes and geocaches wirelessly with other Oregon users. About Outdoor GPS Units
GPS receivers are now made waterproof, lightweight and small enough to take outdoors and provide you with easy navigation and/or a detailed record of your journey. Most navigation units come with only very basic maps installed and you may need to purchase more detailed maps for your area to be loaded onto the unit.
