The Cyrano R3 is a high-end alloy handlebar, made from Ergal aluminium (7075-T6) this is both strong and lightweight. The same Spine Concept™ guidelines that helps you choose your saddle is used to find your most comfortable handlebar shape.
The application of The Spine Concept™ to handlebar shape is the result of fi’zi:k’s research with riders of 3 UCI World Tour Teams that were riding fi’zi:k saddles. A correlation was found between the saddle shape each rider was using and the handlebar shape they were riding.
Just as your choice of fi’zi:k Spine Concept™ saddle shape is guided by your degree of spinal flexibility and subsequent pelvic rotation, fi’zi:k offers this same concept to find your most comfortable handlebar shape.
The Snake Handlebar
If you are very spinally flexible (far less than 90 degrees between your straight legs and your back when bending over as far as you can, keeping your legs straight a shoulders’ width apart), you are a Snake. You are better able to reach further and get down lower to use the full radius of more rounded, classic-style, deeper-drop handlebars. You will prefer the Snake Handlebar because it has a longer reach (85mm) and deeper, classic-style drop (140mm).
The Chameleon Handlebar
If you have an intermediate degree of spinal flexibility (approximately 90 degrees between your straight legs and your back when bending over as far as you can, keeping your legs straight a shoulders’ width apart), you are a chameleon. You are better able to reach further, but perhaps you can’t get down quite as low on the handlebar drops as a Snake would be able to. You will prefer the Chameleon Handlebar because it has a longer reach (85mm) but a shallower, more ergonomic-style drop (135mm).
The Bull Handlebar
If you have a relatively low degree of spinal flexibility (more than 90 degrees between your straight legs and back when bending over as far as you can, keeping your legs straight a shoulders’ width apart), you are a Bull. You will not be able to reach as far or bend as low as a Snake or a Chameleon would be able to. You will prefer the Bull Handlebar because it has a shorter reach (80mm) and a shallower, more ergonomic-style handlebar drop (130mm).
Road bars are curved to offer a multitude of positions to suit the terrain. When climbing in the saddle you will often ride on the tops which are the part of the bar either side of the stems clamping point. When out of the saddle on climbs or accelerating you will often ride on the lever hoods mounted at the front of the bars curved section. For higher speeds you will find yourself on the drops, which offer a lower more aerodynamic position. Road bars come in a variety of widths, from 36cm wide up to 44cm, a good guide for bar width is your shoulder width, a bar should not be narrower than your shoulders as this can close up your chest, but they should not be so wide that you are creating a large frontal area. Road handlebars come in two clamp sizes, 31.8mm which is oversized and 26/25.8mm which is standard, it is essential that you get the correct clamp size for your stem as a poor fit will slip round. Road bars also come in different shapes and depths, with various bends for ergonomic reasons, some will also feature grooves in the material for your brake and gear cables to slot into, this helps to keep the bar round once tape is applied. Then there is the all-in-one bar and stem systems from brands such as Cinelli's Ram 2 and the Pro Stealth which offer clean lines and look great with their exposed carbon finish.
Fi’zi:k is the premium, racing brand of Selle Royal S.p.a. Its name is synonymous with the shape and form of the human body; hence the intuitive association with products that are contact points between riders and their bikes. More than this, fi’zi:k represents beauty, speed, passion, freedom for those who race against each other, race against the clock and for enthusiast cyclists around the world who identify with the feeling of the fire of competition. The humble origin in 1996 stemmed from a vision to improve rider performance by creating superior saddle comfort. Today’s Spine Concept™ provides a guideline to help riders find their most comfortable saddle. Integral to this comfort is the design collaboration with professional athletes and the fact that each saddle is 100% “fatto a mano” (hand-made) in Italy. Some credit Fi’zi:k with redefining the racing saddle category thanks to its destructively-innovative elegant products that are not only comfortable, but also a source of style and beauty in their own right. The Arione, launched in 2003 is one such example. In 2006 fi’zi:k launched a product for riders’ hands: a strong, washable Microtex bar tape. Shoes were then launched in 2010 offering a unique blend of innovative materials with an inimitable style. 2014 saw fi’zi:k launch road cockpit components employing The Spine Concept™ to help riders choose their perfect handlebar shape. In 2016 fi’zi:k saddles are ridden by 8 UCI World Tour Teams. Fi’zi:k’s relentless innovation is facilitated by many such committed professional athletes, from all cycling disciplines. Relentless testing and refinement has helped fi’zi:k to push the boundaries of possibility. It will come as little surprise then that Fi’zi:k products have been ridden to many Cycling World titles, Ironman World Championship titles and beyond.
