The Focus Mares Comp uses the same 6061 alloy frame set which has been ridden to victory in Cyclo Cross world championships, so why is it used on their entry level cross bike? Simple, Focus are a company which are constantly innovating, so their previous years top end technology is passed onto the next seasons bikes. Which means we all benefit from their constant demand for excellence.
The usual top routed cables allow the frame to be shouldered when needed and keeps the brakes and gears running smoothly. The frame is finished in a tough red powder-coated finish, which helps to withstand the rigours of cross riding. FOCUS bikes will not always be treated well, but they should look as good after the hardest tour as they did on their first day. Every frame is electrostatically charged and spray-coated with a special powdered varnish that is extremely tough and hard-wearing. Once cured the resultant finish has enormous mechanical strength as well as the very highest scratch- and shock-resistance.
The specification remains high for 2010 with Shimano's Tiagra components being used in abundance, Tiagra components offer exceptional pound for pound performance and are the ideal choice for a cross bike due to its durable nature. An FSA Omega Compact chainset is combined with an external bottom bracket to transfer your power to the wheels, the 50/34 chain ring combination matched to a wide ratio 11-25 cassette provide you with the perfect range of gears to get up and down hills or over most obstacles.
Focus have used their own Concept stem and matched it to a pair of their Concept SL bars, then provided you with a pair of cross top brake levers to provide as much control as possible when navigating technical sections or urban traffic. Both brake levers control a pair of Tektro RX5 Mini V-brakes, which pull up the Rodi Tiagra Wheelset with minimal effort. The whole package is then rounded off perfectly with a pair of 37mm wide Continental Double Fighter Race tyres and Black Comp seat post with a Concept SL saddle.

About Cyclocross Bikes
Cyclocross bikes are similar to road bike, they are lightweight, with narrow tyres and drop handlebars. However, they also share characteristics with mountain bicycles in that they utilize knobby treaded tyres for traction, and cantilever style brakes for the clearance needed due to muddy conditions. They have to be lightweight because competitors need to carry their bicycle to overcome barriers or slopes too steep to climb in the saddle. The sight of competitors struggling up a muddy slope with bicycles on their shoulders is the classic image of the sport, although un-ridable sections are generally a very small fraction of the race distance. Cross bikes also make good winter bikes or commuters, their frames have plenty of clearance which allows for mudguards, while the upright angles make them agile around town, meaning you can hit the trails at the weekend and then fit some road tyres and commute on them during the week.
