The Focus Mares Pro has received a serious make over for 2010, new to the UK is the carbon framed Mares Pro, this is a serious race level cross bike packed full of technical advances and is sure to be a huge hit in the UK.
Focus have 'beefed' up the front end to withstand the rigours of cross riding by using a 'Tapered' head tube. This features a 1 1/8" steerer at the top which tapers into 1 1/4" at the crown, resulting in a frame which responds directly to your every command. Also new for 2010 and exclusive to the Mares Pro is the BB30 bottom bracket system and SSPS. With the new Stable Stiffness Per Size (SSPS) system the FOCUS engineers have come up with a real stroke of genius. Until now all frame sizes had the same tube dimensions but with SSPS the tube dimensions are exactly tailored to the size of the bike. This means that no matter how tall you are, whether 1.6m or 2.2m, your Focus bike has the same ideal ride quality with consistent rigidity, suspension and strength per size.
The usual top routed cables allow the frame to be shouldered when needed and keeps the brakes and gears running smoothly.
The specification found on the Mares pro is very high for 2010 with Shimano's Ultegra components being used in abundance, Ultegra components offer exceptional pound for pound performance and are the ideal choice for a cross bike due to their durable nature. An FSA Energy Cross chainset is combined with an external bottom bracket to transfer your power to the wheels, the 46/36 chain ring combination matched to a wide ratio 11-28 cassette provide you with the perfect range of gears to get up and down hills or over most obstacles.
Focus have chosen their own Concept Extreme stem and matched it to a pair of their Concept SL bars. The brake levers control a pair of Prime Canti2C Race brakes, which pull up the Fulcrum Racing 5 Wheelset with minimal effort. The whole package is then rounded off perfectly with a pair of 35mm wide Schwalbe's Rocket Ron Evo race tyres and a Concept Extreme seat post with a Concept SL saddle.
Note: Manufacturer may reserve the right to change the specification of that listed or shown on this page.

1. SSPS (See details below) The same stability at various frame sizes is achieved by adapting the tube diameters to provide consistent performance. |
|
2. Full Carbon Dropouts Massively stiff and light carbon dropouts for higher load capacity and more stable connection between chainstays and seatstays. |
|
3. Ultra Light Monocoque Frame Easy on the shoulders: comfortable wide top tube at the rear ensures optimal carrying comfort – the larger frame triangle enables a faster, unimpeded control. |
|
|
3. Tapered Headtube Using the now standard 1 1/8" steerer tube at the top and then enlarging the steerer as it goes towards the fork crown until it reaches an 1 1/4" results in a front end that follows every input you make and transfers as much power as possible through the frame. |
|
4. BB30 Oversized Bottom Bracket The oversized hollow chamber bottom bracket (BB30) provides the significantly larger chain stays optimal connection to the seat tube and top tube.

About Cyclocross Bikes
Cyclocross bikes are similar to road bike, they are lightweight, with narrow tyres and drop handlebars. However, they also share characteristics with mountain bicycles in that they utilize knobby treaded tyres for traction, and cantilever style brakes for the clearance needed due to muddy conditions. They have to be lightweight because competitors need to carry their bicycle to overcome barriers or slopes too steep to climb in the saddle. The sight of competitors struggling up a muddy slope with bicycles on their shoulders is the classic image of the sport, although un-ridable sections are generally a very small fraction of the race distance. Cross bikes also make good winter bikes or commuters, their frames have plenty of clearance which allows for mudguards, while the upright angles make them agile around town, meaning you can hit the trails at the weekend and then fit some road tyres and commute on them during the week.
