Real thing for true cyclists.
A must for the one who want to perform 100%. This product contains just enough with features to help you to be a better cyclist.

Excellent...
Basically does everything I want it to, with good compatibility etc... the only thing I so far can't make it do is show me the HR BPM on the screen when I am riding... I know it can, just haven't figured out how yet....

Oustanding in every way
A really impressive device. Everything is customizable and there are enough functions for everyone, and a few dozen in addition.
The only slight drawback is that it takes quite a while to acquire a satellite signal though this is really only a minor irritation.
Top marks in every way. I know this is now a superseded model however that simply means a lucky few will get some cheaper.
Definitely worth the money so I wouldn't say it is actually that expensive.

Easy to install and extras that make a difference
I bought this somewhat on impulse buy as Wiggle were promoting with 10% off. Existing reviews reinforced the decision and so far so good! Great piece of kit and no issues with connectivity to Heart rate monitor or Cadence sensor. With the product delivering all you expect I made a real effort to explore all the extra features than Garmin as a company offer... and this is where the Edge comes into it's own. Connectivity to their web site for uploading stats, analysis and training ideas. In doing this, you'll get the full benefit of not only the Edge but the complete training solution. I've since learned there is a more recent version Edge 510 out but in reality this version gives all i needed at a better price.

I love it
Having used the Cyclemeter app on my iPhone to log my rides, coupled with a cheap Cateye speedometer in the past... I was keen to take things to the next level on my new road bike.
The Garmin 500 ticked all the boxes for me. I didn't feel I needed all the bells and whistles of the 800. At less than £200 with GPS, HRM and cadence sensor this is a bargain. The red & black design looks great too, also it is not too bulky.
Using the device is really easy and there are lots of settings to customise the data shown to you on your ride. You can have up to 5 pages with between one and eight items of data shown per page.
Using this with the HRM and cadence sensor gives powerful feedback on your performance when uploaded to Strava or indeed the Garmin Connect website.
My only gripe with this is the cheap mount it comes with (you get two by the way). It's a bit fiddly to secure with two rubber bands. I didn't like the position on my stem so I switched this to Garmin's 'Out-front Bike Mount' which offers a much better viewing angle. It's a bit pricey, but much better than the cheap mounts included here.

Great compact unitq
Massive numbers geek and love the data. Already had a garmin 410, but having the info off your wrist and in front of you makes enough of a difference to pay the new price.
Get on board!
I would definitely encourage you to buy the seperate "in front" mount... it's a bit sketchy looking down in pack rides and you can't see it on the stem if you're out of the saddle.

Brilliant!
My new Garmin Edge 500 is an upgrade from the 200.
It is so easy to set up and use. Took about 5 minutes to fit the cadence sensor and check everything was working great. Heart rate monitor works brilliantly. It has all the data you need, plus you can also upload your rides to the Garmin connect website, and also Strava, via a Garmin connect app.
I am very happy with this GPS device. I can't fault it.
Excellent. Product, superb quality.

Fantastic kit at fantastic price
Overall very pleased with the Garmin edge 500. Quality piece of kit.
Wiggle price was great especially when applying discount code.
Only down side was no Australian charging adapter, but is a non issue really as the device ends up plugged in to my PC at the end of every ride anyway to upload the data to Strava.
Have found the HRM and cadence sensor to work very well.
Installation was relatively simple.
Display is very configurable to what is important to you.

Fantastic Export value!!
This is a great piece of kit. There is no argueing with that. Where it came up trumps is the price and service offered by Wiggle with their international delivery.
Based in the UAE, this item was 75 pounds CHEAPER bought in the UK and shipped by Wiggle to UAE, than just going to the shops here.
The website offers multiple currencies, aautomatically deducts VAT for oversaeas sales, and offers free delievery over a certain value, Internationally, as well as domestically.
Top effort, Wiggle.
Delivery took 9 days from order, i think.
I have used the Edge 500 running as well as cycling, with heart rate and cadence functions. Accuracy is great. and very easy to download to Strava etc. Very happy with the purchase all round.

I've only had this computer for a short time but so far I've been very pleased with it. Easy to set up, flawless operation, very comfortable HR strap. All the data you could possibly require.

Easily the best bike computer I have used.
I finally spent big $ on a Garmin bike computer. I have had lots of Cateyes and recently spent AU$100 on a Polar CS100. I am very disappointed with the Polar. This Garmin is far superior, with great features. The bike mount is simple and works well. Being able to configure a few different screens with so many different bits of info is brilliant. The GPS speed measurement means I can move the Garmin from bike to bike without dealing with different wheel length issues.

Awesome
The Edge 500 is fantastic! So easy to setup, adjust and fit to the bike. Collects all of the data that I require with the bonus of being able to add a power meter later on if I choose to. As per usual the delivery was quick, cheers Wiggle!

look no further!!!
this is my first review, I don't usually do things like this, But the Garmin 500 has served me so well that I felt I had to write a review. As soon as you power on the device you can tell it is going to be simple to use, it automatically found both my HR monitor and speed/cadence sensor. It has an automatic wheel size calculator so no messing around there as well. Once it is all installed (by the way the mount is very sturdy and easy to use as well) the information displayed is clear and fully customisable. I found this has really given me motivation to ride. Especially using the courses function - If I go on a club route, I can bring it up on the garmin and follow it, there are no maps on the 500 but the trace is fine as it rotates and zooms in/out like ordinary GPS devices so is clear. I don't know why it took me so long to buy it.
16 February 2013
Absolutely fantastic
This device has changed my riding completely. Let me count the ways:
- Having instant feedback on the hill gradient is a great way to monitor your training progress, or your fatigue on a long ride - i.e. 'this feels like 10% but Garmin says 6% - I must be tired!'
- The speedo self-calibrates - it uses the GPS to work out the diameter of your wheels after the first few hundred metres, so it can use the magnetic sensor from then on. Fantastic!
- Download the data straight into Strava, or Garmin's free software - there's no point going for an epic ride unless you can brag about it on social media
- Comes with cadence and HR sensors - all beautifully integrated.
- Auto pause whenever you stop riding
- Really small, lightweight, easy to put in your pocket at the cafe
- Doesn't interfere with other rider's devices
- Compass, thermometer, altimeter...
As you can tell, I love this computer. The display is endlessly customisable, so I have my hill climb screen, my touring screen, my after-action-review screen, etc. It makes me feel like I am piloting a space shuttle rather than riding a bike :)
14 February 2013
Just the ticket
After having a CatEye V2C the upgrade to the Edge 500 was a well worth investment. For anyone wanting data from their training there is more than enough with this. The overall use is easy and straight forward. Screen management useful as you can tailor for different aspects. With downloadable courses and basic mapping, the virtual partner mode is excellent for pacing against. Overall, excellent little unit with enough potential for anyone.
12 February 2013
Easy to set up and customise
I bought this for the heart rate data. I find it very useful in helping me work within specific zones as I can see what my heart rate is. You can customise up to 5 different screens to give you all the info you need.

Great device
Great device but because it has been shipped to Australia is doesn't have a charger adapter for Australia - very disappointing

Product has fantastic features and options.
I am very pleased with this purchase. The plethora of options have been very useful and the information they provide helpful in enabling me to access my own fitness and improve on it. The device is accurate, easy to use, and provides accurate information.
12 February 2013
All the data you could need
This product will give you all the data on you will ever need to track your performance. With so many features it does a little time to work out how to use, but definitely worth the effort.
11 February 2013
Great Product but one let down
This is the second Garmin Edge 500 I have bought this year. Obviously, if I hadn't been delighted with the first one then I wouldn't have been buying another. Just the one let down, the included "Premium" HR Monitor strap is a poorer (and I suspect cheaper) version of the one that came with my first purchase. The chest contact pads are part of the elastic strap and I feel these are likely to fail as the strap stretches with use. Also the transmitter sits on the strap rather than being integrated with it. So, despite this being a great product, I am a bit disappointed that even though I paid more this time I feel the product is a little inferior. Please also note that the Edge 500 is being replaced by the Edge 510 shortly.

Great product,lots of features.
Great product and great service again from Wiggle .
Thanks to Gemma in Sales for sorting out purchase issues.

My most important riding accessory ...
The Garmin 500 is an invaluable tool for any cyclist, at any level. The ease of use in both collecting data, processing and using data on the run and then downloading data to archive is "best in practice". Moreover, linked with the popular Strava software this is truly my favourite and most important cycling accessory. I have been using a Garmin 500 for over 3 years - my only disappointment is that I didn't have one sooner ... all that old data that has gone begging.
06 February 2013
Great product
A quality product, if you need a computer then pay a little bit more and get the cadence/HRM function, its worth it,

Does this edge 500 Red give accurate outside temperature . In the same way that the 800 does..
Answers
Answer:
I have never checked the temperature measurements made on the edge. For my use, temperature is of secondary importance and provides only an indicator of whether it was a hot, warm, cool or cold day on which I took the exercise (i.e. bike ride). Yes, the GSC 10 sensor sits on the chain stay and picks up a signal from both the pedal crank (for cadence) and a read spoke (for speed). There is no trouble with wireless loss at this distance as there are with some other wireless speed sensors which force you to monitor the front wheel to avoid wireless drop out.3 months, 1 week ago

Both work via ATI+ (which is wireless)Speed via a magnet from the back wheel

Answer:
The cadence and speed sensor is the same thing. It is a garmin gsc10 that is mounted on the non drive side. You place a magnet on a rear spoke and align it with the sensor and mount a magnet on the left crank arm to align with the sensor. So yes, it's wireless and speed is on the rear wheel

Things like mapping rides, average speed, distance etc. all are available on the many apps?
Country : Irish Republic
Answers
Answer:
To expand on other answers... I have used a variety of iphone apps, all of which failed to work accurately. The problem is that phone apps communicate indirectly with gps satellites, using the phone network. This works OK if you have a strong signal, but often you don't, especially if the phone is in your pocket. As anyone with a smart phone knows, the 3G coverage needed to make a navigation app work adequately is patchy (4G may be better but that isn't widely available yet). Also, a phone navigation or cycle computer app sucks the life out of your battery. At most you get about 5 hours from a full battery. Useless for all day rides. I gave up on phone apps some time ago.1 month ago
Answer:
The garmin battery won't die half way through your ride.Answer:
In one word. Accuracy.I too used the iphone app before buying a Garmin device so can compare the performance of both. I would quite often find my route straying off the roads and even gaps in the data when using the app. I also did not think that the elevation data was very accurate.
As a member of a cycle club i would also compare my Garmin data to that of app users and other Garmin users after competing the same ride. While the Garmin users were all very close with the data some of the apps were way off.
The final thing to think about is battery use. Get a Garmin and save the battery in your phone for emergency use. One day you may well be miles from home with a mechanical issue and need to make that rescue phone call.
5 months, 2 weeks ago
Answer:
Hi.It gives a ton more features. Plus the Garmin connect site is very cool too. But what I like about it the most is the batter doesn't die on 4 or 5 hour plus rides like my iphone did. Check out the Garmin manual for all the features but if you're a serious rider who likes to keep all the stats (not just the basic ones) then this great.

But it can also be charged through the USB from a computer right?
Answers
Answer:
The mains plug came with a main unit with 3 or 4 adapters to allow different plug/pin configurations. I do not know whether an Australian version plug is included. The USB lead also charges the Edge from the PC. I have only ever used the main to charge my Edge once in the year I have owned it as the PC keeps it topped up while I am uploading/downloading data and routes. A full charge should keep the Edge alive and working for around 15 hours. I have never seen mine drop its power reserve less than 70% on more than half day rides.3 months, 1 week ago

You probably need a GSC10 for each bike. I find that monitoring Cadence on road rides is not that useful as you often need to either stop or change gear. So when on my road bike I simply use the GPS to allow the Edge to work out speed etc. On my Turbo trainer the GSC10 is invaluable and it is well worth monitoring Cadence here. Horses for courses really. Edge will hold profiles for a number of different bikes - you just tell it which bike you're on.3 months, 1 week ago

Answer:
The battery in the GSC10 can easily be changed. It is a standard CR2032 type battery. See page 27 of the user manual for the Edge500 (available from the Garmin website).Ditto for the heart rate monitor, same battery - see page 22 of the manual.
The display is infinitely changeable - you can easily change it to have both heart rate and cadence on the same page (max. of 3 pages, max. of 8 data fields on each). But note - if you use 8 data fields per page, the fields get a bit small. In my case I need my reading glasses - not very practical while going flat out.
Page 35 of the manual explains how to do this - press and hold MENU, select Settings> Bike Settings> Data Fields

Answer:
Yes the sensor batteries can be very easily changed. Unscrew backing (no screw driver required), change battery and close.Screens on the Edge 500 are adjustable/adaptable for a variety of data fields and number of fields shown. You can easily select heart rate and cadence to be displayed along with a myriad of other ride metrics.
