Great Training Tool The Garmin SDM4 Foot Pod is an excellent addition to your training tools and enables you to use the features of the Garmin Forerunner more effectively. Whilst the Garmin's main feature is is GPS capability the SDM4 Foot Pod makes the Forerunner series very functional indoors tracking speed/pace, distance and running cadence. The previous model foot pod was the size of a small football and needed to be woven into your shoe laces. The SDM4 Foot Pod is very small and unlike previous versions easily snaps in place over your laces. (Installation takes less than 2 seconds!). Pairing and calibration are a breeze and you will be recording your indoor data in no time. The cadence function can be used indoors and out and helps develop your running efficiency. Whilst the Garmin SDM4 Foot Pod is a bit pricey relative to the older foot pod it is definitely value for money and I would highly recommend it. 18 November 2009

incompatible Bought it at the same time as a forerunner 110; now realise it is not compatible. It is dissappointing because a) it appeared as a recommended product after selecting my sports watch and b) wiggle's system should be smart enough to warn customers that the 2 products I am buying at the same time are not compatible. Not only did I wast $70 but nearly $300 as I train indoors 80% of the time. 08 February 2013

Essential piece of kit for you 910XT Having got the 910XT I needed to get all the data available from my runs. Got this & wouldn't run without it now. Pairing was simplicity itself & works seamlessly with the 910XT. Not the cheapest gear out there but definitely the best 24 December 2012

Answer:

Yes, mine does. You have to first go into settings on the watch and get the watch to recognise the presence of a foot pod. Once this is done, it seems to pick up my pod at all times, esp when I am indoors and the gps doesnt work. ;-)

After I calibrated the foot pod it is aprox 98,6% accurate. When the threadmill says I have run 1000m the the watch/footpod says I have been runnning 984 meters. I find this quite impressive

I do not know if it is compatible with 310 XT but you should be able to see this on garmin website. I would assume it is, as I use the pod with my rather old forerunner 305

I use it with my 310XT and it works well. I cannot answer regarding the accuracy on the treadmill, but I expect it to perform well after calibration.

It does work perfectly with a 310XT (you have to enable it in the menu).

I have not used it on a treadmill, but even without altering the calibration, it was within 10metres on a 1mile road run that I have measured with two GPS units, a bike computer and a car odometer :-)
Also worth noting that treadmills are infamous for being a bit variable on distance accuracy (between machines).

Battery Life and Garmin Forerunner 405

Hi,
Im planning to do a run that is about 18hours long. I currenlty have the garmin Garmin Forerunner 405 which has a battery life around 8 hours. If i buy the footpod can i turn the GPS off on my watch and use the GPS on the footpd to extend the battery life of my watch? Im pretty sure this would not work but thought i would ask!

Answer:

Yes, this will work. In your ant+ menu you should calibrate the foot pod with the gps before your run to get the most accurate results. Once your ready to do your run, all you have to do is turn the gps off, and the watch will take care of the rest.

The foot pod is NOT a GPS. It's a mechanical device that tracks your steps if you run inside. However i find it quite accurate though (98,4% accurate), hence you should be able to use it outside to save the battery of your garmin watch, however I have no clue on how much battery time you would gain on your watch, as the watch probably uses some battery to communicate with the foot pod.. The Foot pod has 30 hours of battery time

The foot pod doesn't have a GPS built in. It has accelerometers. With that it can give you the distance, pace and cadence but not the GPS coordinates or show the route taken afterwards. I expect the battery life of your FR405 to be better with the foot pod (and gps turned off) than when using the GPS, but cannot give you an answer on how much better since I don't own a 405.

Does it give a cadence read out?

Description says speed, distance and pace. Surely as the foot pod works on # stride and stride length, it must be measuring cadence - but does it send that to the head unit to show on a screen?

My Garmin FR910XT shows cadence using this foot pod.

It's not the footpod that gives the cadence read-out -- it's the watch. The foot pod can measure cadence but it's the watch that records it and displays it. The forerunner 210 watch can;t display cadence in real time, but cadence can be recorded and viewed on the computer or on Garmin connect once the file is uploaded. The FR60/FR70 can display cadence in realtime. So can the 310XT (I think). Check the user manuals of each watch.

No - I dont believe so.

This device is "Garmin running specific", and doesnt run on the ANT + protocol that you use to connect your Garmin 800 to Power Meters, Speec / Cadence sensors etc. As a cycling computer, your Garmin 800 "doesnt know" to look for the Foot Pod...
