Gatorade produces a range of energy drinks designed specifically for professional sports people. The drink was first developed in 1965 by the University of Florida in an attempt to help improve the ailing performances of their American football team, known as the Gators. The university physicians found that the players required a fluid to quickly halt dehydration, replace the electrolytes lost through sweat and a carbohydrate energy source. The scientists created “Gatorade”, and soon after using the drink the team’s performance rapidly improved culminating in a first winning season in more than a decade. In 1967, the Gators won their first Orange Bowl. The losing coach when asked why they lost said: “We didn’t have Gatorade. That made the difference.” In 1969, The Kansas City Chiefs started using the drink after a recommendation from the Gators. The Chiefs went on to win the NFL Super Bowl IV that year. It is no wonder to this day Gatorade is still the official sports drink of the NFL.
