For use only on road bikes, this high performance cable system replaces galvanized, stainless steel, and other coated cables. Patented cable coating technology designed for low friction and durability.
- There are two different lengths of cables in the kit. The longer cable and liner is for the rear brake, the shorter cable and liner is for the front brake. Each cable has 2 end terminations - a barrel end (mountain bike) and a pear end (road bike). Select the end that corresponds to your type of brake and remove the end termination you will not be using.
- Remove old cables and housing; note cable routing and location of ferrules. Using old housing pieces as a pattern, cut new housing lengths to match. Using wire cutters and awl make sure housing ends are free of burrs and wide open. Install new housing into place on bike.
- Turn barrel adjusters to fully clockwise.
- Carefully feed new cable through new housing and cable housing stops, adding ferrules as needed - nosed ferrules are to be used at the cable stops, the non-nosed ferrules should be used at the brake lever (if needed) and brake caliper.
- With cable held taught, secure it in pinch bolt and tighten to brake manufacturer's torque requirements. Trim off excess cable and crimp a cap on cable end. Slide red crimp cap cover over crimp cap.
- Adjust brakes as usual.

The invention of the brake cable, known as a Bowden cable, has been popularly attributed to Sir Frank Bowden, founder and owner of the Raleigh Bicycle company who, circa 1902, was reputed to have started replacing the rigid rods used for bicycle brakes with a flexible wound cable. The basic design has remained un-changed, but improvements in materials and technology have improved providing a smoother and more positive lever feel.
