Top Features of the Hope Stainless Steel Bottom Bracket
All common systems are covered with this upgrade unit - making it ideal for Shimano, Race Face and others. The machined aluminium cups hold either full stainless steel cartridge bearings, or ceramic bearings in stainless races.
- Weight: 113g
- MTB
- Road
These custom, Swiss made bearings are double sealed, fully serviceable and removable which give much greater life span than stock units. The bearings are made (as all Hope bearings are) by INA and have been designed to run directly on the crankset axle, without the use of shims or spacers -again increasing life and reliability.
Hope use a non contact, free running labyrinth seal to protect the bearing externally, and the machined aluminium centre tube is sealed internally with o-rings. The unit is suitable for 68 & 73mm shell width's.
Standard 6 colours are available on cups - red, blue, silver, black, gold and gunmetal, with the centre tubes being black on the stainless and gunsmoke on the ceramic.
About Bottom Brackets
Bicycle bottom brackets connect the cranks to the bike and allow the crank arms to rotate. There are various sizes of bottom bracket shell on the market, so compatibility needs to be checked. The three most common frame bottom bracket shell widths are 68mm (English threaded road and mtb), 70mm (Italian threaded road) and 73mm (British threaded mtb). There are also many axle shapes and styles, from JIS or ISO square tapers through to the round splined axles such as ISIS or Octalink and then there is the new external cup systems which have the axle built into the crank arms. Some frames are now using the new BB30 system which uses bearings pushed directly into the frame and removes the needs for cups to be threaded into the frame.

Magazine reviews for Hope Stainless Steel Bottom Bracket
Review from Bikeradar
The new Hope external bottom bracket looks like another Lancashire longevity winner. Sick of short-lived external bottom brackets on their own bikes, Hope have taken all they know about wheel seals and bearings (which is a hell of a lot) and put it into this new bottom bracket
Upscaled versions of Hope's legendary Pro 2 and 3 hub labyrinth seals stop shit getting in from outside, with O-ring seals on the internal alloy tube too.
Behind these are custom stainless steel units from INA (who do all Hope's bearings) with even smoother, longer running ceramic options (£95) and Truvativ-compatible versions available soon. Full installation instructions are laser etched onto the cups and sleeve, and they come in a wide range of anodised colours.
We've had our sample running since November through a seriously wet and nasty northern winter - easily enough to kill most other external BBs. The Hope is still spinning silk smooth with no hint of pop, grind or grumble.
While the initial price might seem high compared to other disposable units, the bearings are easily replaceable when they do eventually wear out. We'll be back with a long-term test to see exactly how long that takes - we reckon it'll be a fair while yet though.
In conclusion...
A great transmission investment, with superb smoothness and sealing so far
