I have a pair of roclites that suffered after travelling a few days through rocky glacial morraine and the small holes that appeared in the mesh upper grew and grew until big enough for a foot to come through.
How is the upper on these and will I suffer the same problems?

Answer:
I do high mileage off road including several off-road halves and over two years the only signs of wear in the upper are minute hair line cracks in the lower rubber welts - like stress fractures, but these have not developed into splits.

They are actually remarkably durable for a lightweight shoe. Been running with them in very wet and rough conditions, never had a problem with the mesh.

I would say that these are a really robust shoe, I havn't used the roclite but mine looks new after a 21km and a 11 km race.
My girlfriend got stamped by a horse without making a scratch on the shoe.

Answer:
Could be, depending on what you are used too. The sole is quite soft, either than that they feel like a normal lightweight running shoe. I think the rubber on the sole would wear quite fast if you use them primarily for asphalt.

I've run a 10km on road with this shoes and had no problems. the knobby sole looks like it would be uncomfortable but actually was no trouble.
Not sure how far I would go on the road but 5 miles would be fine.

Answer:
I wouldn't use the 212's for what is fundamentally a road race. The tallons when combined with the relatively thin support would no doubt cause discomfort. These are best for the trails and are fine for muddy tracks, grassy trails, sandy or hard pack trails and loose rocky trails. Not great on road, rocks / boulder trails that may be mossy as the talons will cause sliding and wet timber bridges will bring you unstuck as well.

I haven't done a lot of running in my new shoes yet but I ran a few kilometers on the road after a bush run and they were fine. They are definately better suited for the track instead of the road in terms of cushioning but it wasnt a big deal for me. Hope this helps a little.

Absolutely. But they offer very little cushioning which takes a little getting used to when running on a hard surface.

I used these shoes to run the welsh 1000m Race (22 miles, 8000ft of ascent) which is all off road, with no dramas. So i reckon they are a great choice (as long as you are a practiced mid/fore foot runner, NOT a heel stricker).

I am a marathon runner and have been running with the X-Talon 212 for a couple of weeks now. I run 30--35k km trail each weekend, and these shoes are great. Will be attending a trail marathon in July using these shoes. Not sure about how they´d perform on the beach, I only run in the forest.

Yep, I do regular 3 hour rogaines in them. Just note that for offroad they seriously lack ankle protection.
Grip might be a little excess for what you need for offroad marathons. Think of how much mud your expecting. Sand itself doesnt really need this much grip.

Answer:
they don't have any cushioning so it would depend on the surface you are running on, if the event is off road with soft ground then yes if you have trail paths of scree etc then I would say no, opt for a cushioned trail shoe.

Yes you could do up to marathon distances but on mixed ground - off road. Too much time on hard surfaces and your feet might suffer from not enough cushioning.

Th Inov-8 212 will be a good choice for a beach marathon, considering it's good grip and fit, but why not go for the lighter Inov-8 195, with it's lower weight and roomier forefoot...

I would say yes - assuming its an off-road route and you are quite light (60 to 70 kg for a man, maybe a little less for a woman)) and run 'lightly' and reasonably fast. I have recently bought a pair and ran hard hilly 16 to 24 km runs in them straight away. I do have a few twinges in my ankle from running more on my front foot so I would advise a gradual intro if you are used - as I am - to more padded shoes with more of a heel. They are nice and grippy in mud and wet grass so I imagine good for the south downs. I plan to run the Motatapu marathon in them in March.

Most racing flats and racing oriented trail shoes are unisex, so just convert the shoe size to women's sizes.

If I am just about to start fell running and off-road running is this a good shoe to start with? There are so many options out there! I am thinking this may well be too advanced to start with? I am used to road running up to around 10k but am fairly new to running in general but a friend wants to take me fell running and I'm keen to give it a go! Thanks

Thanks - but I was asking which shoe you would recommend as a starter shoe - I assume it's more about choosing a 3 arrow transition shoe and then deciding which terrain. I will be running on grassy hills and through muddy wood trails etc etc - so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
