About Rim Brake Pads

Wiggle stocks a large range of brake blocks for road calliper brakes, v-brakes and cantilever brakes. Brake blocks are available in various fitments and compounds to suit your needs, softer pads will wear quickly but are ideal for wet weather use, whereas hard compound pads will last but not offer great wet weather performance. Most brake blocks will be a medium compound unless otherwise stated, making them ideal for all round use.

About the Kool Stop brand

Kool Stop, established in 1977 and specialising in manufacturing quality rim and disc brake pads for most bikes. Road brakes, V-brakes and cantilever brakes are all covered within their range, along with brakes pads foreveryday use they produce a soft compound 'Salmon' coloured brake pad for wet weather use. All compounds are rim friendly and are formulated at Koolstop to ensure the highest standards. Dual Compound: Patented process blends two top compounds into one brake pad for better braking, longer pad life and less rim wear. Black: A Standard dry condition compound . Silver, Red, Yellow and Blue: An all condition compound available in an assortment of colours. Salmon: For extremely dry, wet and muddy conditions. Green (Z Chromium): Ceramic rims are great for reducing heat build up on the rim surface but the heat generated during braking on ceramic rims can be brutal on the brake pads. Heat kills brake pads and that is why Kool-Stop developed the Z-Chromium green compound. Not only does it last much longer, it has better stopping power Carbon: Carbon rim friendly compound for carbon rims.

Kool Stop are the best It's a good move to replace the one piece moulded pads on cheap V-brakes with a holder and insert system and an even better move to use a Kool Stop insert. It is cheaper to replace an insert than a complete pad assembly and a good quality insert holder usually incorporates a ball joint to assist setting up the brake pads flat on the rim or with some toe- in if you prefer. I have used Kool Stop all salmon colour pads in both expensive and cheap V-brakes with notable improvement in wet weather stopping power and I've now tried this dual compound set of inserts with similar results. The "patented plow tip" actually promotes some toe-in on set up which helps greatly in reducing squeal. The "plow tip" wipes water and dirt off the rim track on first application, at leats until the tip wears away. These inserts fit Shimano holders and most other brands as well. A good pair of holders with these inserts are a great improvement over the one piece pads on cheap brakes and they make a good brake even better. I've had good results fitting Kool Stops to everything from a no-name cast alloy brake through to mid-range Avid and top of the line Shimano XTR. 28 June 2010

They brake! Fitted to my aztec v-brake and they work a treat. I use daily for a 15mile commute to work on a hybrid and have had no problems in the rain. They are more expensive than the aztec inserts (which I was changing every 3 months or so) , but after a month are showing very little wear. I haven't given them a five star rating because my experience with brake inserts is limited to these and the antec ones. The braking is noticeably different with these, they just don't wear down as quickly. 21 June 2010

IMHO, the best G.P. V-brake inserts IMHO these are the best general purpose, all-weather V-brake pads, period. They provide excellent stopping power, in all weathers, and do not judder, provided they are used in quality, balanced rim brakes, are properly seated, not too worn, and used on properly cared for rims. I use mine on Mavic 317 and 717 rims in Avid Shorty 6 Cantilever Brakes (the earlier model without the gap in the arms). Note: Mavic 717 rims are well worth the extra cost; I wore through 317 rims, rather too quickly, on a back wheel! It is definitely worth getting these inserts rather than complete new pads, I rarely have to adjust the brakes now, I often just put in new inserts when they get too worn. 28 January 2010

Silent and powerful I used these pads for about 500km during a vacation along a couple of cycle paths in Austria. They performed very well, both on sunny days and under heavy rain in the mountains. I'm very satisfied by their stopping power, even when used on a fully loaded bike. Recommended. 10 November 2009

Will these inserts fit into XTR V-brake shoes?

Answer:

They fit Deore V-brake shoes perfectly and I think all Shimano V-brake shoes with a pin are a standard size. I don't think you will have a problem with the XTR V-brakes.

I used the old Shimano pins to keep the blocks in place as the pins that came with the blocks were a little fiddly to put in.

I have no problems fitting them in my XT shoes, so your XTR should be fine. They even come with holding pins in the package in case you lose/destroy your existing ones.
