About Bottle Cages
Water bottles and cages are essential items for your bike, fluid replenishment is essential for long term activities and fitting a water bottle and cage to your bike is the perfect way of keeping you hydrated. Studies show that loss of fluid equal to 2% of your body mass is sufficient to cause a significant decrease in performance. Bottle cages have also received the lightweight treatment with materials such as carbon, titanium and alloy often used. These cages will accept water bottles from 500ml up to 1,000ml, making it possible to carry 2,000ml of fluid on your bike. It's also worth using an Energy drink whilst riding as these will help replace minerals lost through sweating.

Standard Bottle Cage
I purchased this because I wanted a black cage to go with my new bike. There's not a lot to say about this cage other than it is pretty lightweight, of good quality and pretty sturdy.
My only gripe is that the paint rubs off when taking the bottle in and out, marking the bottle and leaving exposed aluminium. Not a problem, just a little annoying for someone so obsessive about keeping their bike clean :)

Easy to use bottle cage
Not much to say about this except that its light, rugged, easy to use and available in black or silver.

It does its job
A heavy weight, cheap bottle holder. It certainly holds a bottle and is heavier than others. Ok for mountatin biking.

This is the thickness of the aluminium - moutain biking shakes the cage around a bit more so they make it thicker and stronger. It weighs a little more too, although you will hardly notice.The 6mm will last longer if you travel over rough terrain.

I ordered 2 of the 6mm MTB versions for my daughter's Specilialized MTB bikes and they were fine. I am not 100% certain, but I think the mm size is more about the bolts that attach the cage and as I used the existing ones in the respective frames that was not relevant as I did not need the ones supplied with the cages.Answers

Both will fit a standard bottle cage mount, they are simply different sizes for strength and weight changes. If you ride road you don't need a strong bottle cage and you want it to be light weight so go for the 5mm. If you ride off road you need the cage to be more robust and weight isn't as important as reliable parts, go for the 6mm.2 years, 11 months ago
