Does the Job If you have Shimano gears and need to remove the cassette, this tool is what you need. Take out the skewer, position this and use a 19mm spanner to turn it. You will also need a tool to hold the cassette to stop it turning if you're removing it. Found this tool invaluable, swapping gears between wheels and bikes. 09 July 2010

Oversize Parts??

Hi Folks,

I'm trying to rebuild my son's bike and having trouble. For instance I cannot remove the rear cassette (Shimano) with my Lifeline removal tool. The splines simply will not fit - they are just too tight.

I notice the bike has an 'oversize' decal and I have heard that this is because some parts are 'beefed-up'. Could this be the reason I'm having trouble?

I'm also trying to replace the bearings and my first attempt resulted in a bent axle shaft. So it seems there is something very non-standard about this bike. Can you enlighten me any??

Of the 12 splines, one of them is slightly wider than the others - you may just simply need to try a different orientation to make the tool fit.

I think you need a TL-FW30 freewheel removal tool, according to the Shimano website.

Answer:

The Shimano MF HG37 is a freewheel, not a cassette. It does not use a lockring so you can't use this tool to remove it. You need to use a Shimano Freewheel removal tool which unfortunately we no longer sell.

Are you sure it's a cassette and not screw on? the 8/9/10 speed tool will work on 7 speed cassettes, but not the other way round. It's better to get the right tool though, the splines on this one will be loose.
