The Lightweight RD hand crafted carbon fibre & titanium rear derailleur weighs less than 120g. This newly developed rear derailleur is about 30% lighter than common derailleurs.
Due to the inherent stiffness of the carbon fibres shifting precision is still impeccable, setting new standards for road racing. Aside from low weight, the main priorities for the R&D team at Lightweight were reliability and durability. All screws are set in solid thread inserts made from specially hardened aluminum; the threads were not cut into the carbon fibres. Wherever it made sense we even resorted to heavier steel parts to ensure perfect function. The result has been proven to meet our expectations in long test runs. The derailleur is equipped with KCNC pulleys.
Various derailleur systems were designed and built as far back as the late 1800s. A French bicycle tourist, writer and cycling promoter Paul De Vivie (1853-1930), invented a two speed rear derailleur in 1905 which he used on forays into the Alps, and we wonder if 20 gears are enough..... Since then there have been many advancements, in the number of gears, materials and reductions in weight. Wiggle lists a large selection of front and rear derailleurs catering for double and triple systems with 7, 8, 9, 10 and even 11 speed cassettes.
