Magura's cheapest brake has had a complete makeover for 2009, turning it from a plastic bargain-basement option into a proper performer.
The main changes are high pressure (hence 'HP') brake hoses, a Heat Eater connection which swivels for easy alignment, post mount fitting and a lightweight drilled SL rotor. You can even get the Ventidisc (self cooling) and Centrelock discs as options if you want.
The closed bar clamp means grips have to come off to fit the brake, but it snuggles up in or outside SRAM or Shimano shifters fine. The mineral oil hydraulics are really easy to bleed (which is lucky, because both hoses are a super-long 180cm) and it comes with a confidence-boosting five-year leak-proof warranty.
Bedding-in the pads in dry, clean conditions is vital but once cooked they last fairly well and sintered Endurance pads are available too. They've got Magura's typically firm and slightly wooden feel, but the forged lever is wobble and rattle-free.
The Julie's power levels aren't far off the much more expensive Louise and Marta brakes and are certainly enough for aggressive use with the 180mm rotors we used.
At 462g for a complete set, it isn't too heavy either and the pricing is keen. There's no doubting Magura's cheapest brake has been reborn.
In conclusion...
A proper trail brake for the price of old discounted anchors
