Formed in 1996 by Cyrille Guimard, former manager of cycling legend Bernard Hinault, the French Cofidis team have courted cycling greatness and controversy in equal measure. The early years saw great successes including an overall tour series win in 1998 featuring a 3rd place finish in the tour de france by Bobby Julich and 4 wins in the one day classics by Frank Vandenbroucke. In the decade that followed, Cofidis enjoyed prominent stage wins in the tour de france, two of these by French cyclist David Moncoutié, winning on Bastille day for two years running. David Millar was a significant member of the team as the 2004 time trial world champion and 2000 tour de france prologue winner, he also spoke out against the team’s controversial results driven pay scheme leading it to be dropped. The team withdrew from the 2007 pro tour series after doping problems and their pro tour licence was not renewed by the UCI for 2010. Cofidis continue to compete as a UCI Professional Continental Team and their distinctive red kit has graced the podium of the Vuelta a Espana and Tour de l'Ain in 2011.
