What MTB
the well-sized and efficient MiNewt from Niterider scored nine points in our recent lights grouptest, so we've been eagerly awaiting the arrival of its new cousin, the three LED TriNewt. Niterider has stayed with the same organic shape, and while it does sit larger on your bars, it's still a beautifully-designed thing. The sophisticaed take on an O-ring that fixes it in place, remains one of our all-time favourites for its low hassle factor.
The beam is clean toned and powerful, delivering more punch forwards than the MiNewt and, as you'd expect, a broader spread. Of couse, all that extra luminescence requires a bigger power source and that's the only downside of this light. The MiNewt has a tiny battery that sits neatly against the stem giving you one discreet unit. This battery (with 3.5-7hrs run-time)is around double the sixe. That said, it is very easy to fix onto your bike and the Velcro strap has held up well and kept everthing firm during all our testing.
So, will it be the much-loved MiNewt, or the new boy about town, the TriNewt? We still love the ickle chap for most of your after-dark adventures, but for more technical night routes or anyone needing that extra power-punch, the trinewt is the one. it aint cheap, bu the quality of the light and the construction quality make it worth saving for.
In conclusion...
Well-designed, good quality light, with a good power/spread balance.
