Jaws Carbon Sole:
The sole is made of thermoplastic enriched with carbon powder, this provides rigidity at a low weight. The front end of the sole is divided into 2 parts, a mid sole in fibre with added carbon powder and an outsole. The natural rubber rear part is designed to ensure maximum grip.

Speed Lace System:

Northwave Celsius Arctic GTX (Gore-Tex) Winter MTB Boots 4.7 5 50 50

The answer to my problems I've always struggled with cold feet during the winter months here in Portland Oregon, USA. I typically ride in temperatures between 25F and 55F during the winter (yes, fairly mild compared to some places) - but my feet would be cold in less than an hour. I decided on the Arctic version because I really didn't want to take the chance that the standard version would not be warm enough. I have not felt that they are too warm until I get up to 55F or higher. Colder temps are no problem and I'm able to ride 2-3hours without any issues. Waterproof-ness - pretty good for mild rain but the top of the boot does not close tightly around my ankles and the boot is also a bit short so my tights or rain pants do not adequately cover the top. But, even with wet feet and cold weather, my feet stayed warm - drying them out inside took some time however. Fit - I am a US13 in most shoes, a size 47 in Specialized and Sidi shoes. For these boots I bought a 47 as well - they are a little loose with thin socks. Wool socks work better but can be too warm depending on temps. I am usually able to tighten them up enough, though, and the extra room also helps with keeping my toes warm. Over all Highly recommended and a worthwhile purchase. 22 March 2013

Resolved my long standing issue - Cold Toes Having tried a number of different shoes and brands, overshoes etc. I investigated these shoes and after only 4 or 5 rides can confirm these are one of my better investments! I have always suffered with cold toes even on rides under 20 miles and these have without doubt resolved this. I must point out I have learnt cleat position is as important but after ride over 50 miles yesterday (cold, ice on roads and showers) I arrived back at my car with no coldness and totally dry feet. In normal shoes I would be a size 11 / 11.5 and I have gone with a 48 in these which I think is about a size bigger than my normal footwear in real fit terms whereas this would suggest a size and a half bigger based on the Northwave sizing chart (13). I wore thick socks and this was nicely snug with plenty of room to move my feet around and wiggle my toes that is needed during a long ride. Would highly recommend! 18 March 2013

No more cold feet! I have the older road version of these shoes but they have the silly laces you can hardly reach. Thse have a much better pull-string tightener. I have narrow, flat feet and they feel a bit on the large side but this helps my circulation and my feet stayed toasty warm on a cold 3 hr ride. If Northwave could somehow make the seal around the ankle a bit more waterproof they would be good in the rain too. Still perfect for very cold rides in icy conditions. 12 March 2013

For cold, but not arctic enviroments My best winther shoe so far. I tried Shimano mtb winter boots a couple of years (and models) ago, and they were horrible. I ride 2X20 km per day in the city. Winther temperatures in DK is down to -10C: I suffer from very cold feet, but the NW arctic keeps them alive until now. Coldest morning has been around -5C (wool socks). Normal people with normal foot temperature, will probably be even more satisfied. They are sort of waterproof, and resists the usual spray from the wheels, but in heavy rain they take in water around the ankle, and maybe a little from the front as well (hard to see where the water came from) The fit/feeling of the boot is nice and soft. Fast closure/adjustment of the boot. I'm normally a UK10,5-11,5 and bought these in UK12. Fits perfect, a liiiittle big with normal socks, but i prefer room for the woolen ones. 26 February 2013

The artic version is designed to protect you in the coldest conditions, whereas the normal shoes are slightly more breathable but will not be as protective in the really cold months.

Is the sole of the boot flush including the SPD cleat with the ground?

Answer:

You can walk very easily with them. The cleat is recessed slightly inside the boot's rubber sole. Plenty of grip in the pattern for walking outdoors. What I do find though is that they are a bit slippery when wet on polished surfaces like tiles, as the rubber is quite tough. It's not rock hard plastic though, like a lot of racing shoes.

Depends on what you mean by normal sized.

I have 44 in normal shoes and bought a pair of 46. They are perfect. I have place for a pair of better insoles and a pair of thicker socks and still leaves room for some air around the toes.

the sizes are a tiny bit small when new but give/stretch over time, so don't go up a size.

You should order a 44, shimano shoes come up small so a 45 shimano shoe would be the same as 44 in Northwave.

I got one size over my Specialized BG and there is plenty of room for thicker socks. They are a bit roomy with thin socks and very warm in the high twenties. Get the same size if you plan on thin socks and warmer temps.

I wear 44 regular shoes, 45 shimano MTB shoes and 45 with these.

Unless you're riding in Siberia, you won't need to worry about layering socks too much: they're incredibly warm.

DiverDave ... I think they have the extra size 'built in' to the sizing. I wear Shimano 45's in the summer and tried two sizes of the Northwave's ... the 45's were correct. There is enough space for socks and they're so warm you won't need huge thick ones.

Specialized are a larger fit and Northwave are standard, if you go to a 45 you won't see a big difference between the Specialized and the Northwave shoes. If you want to layer socks you might have to go to a 46.

I have Sidi size 45 which are rather tight. I ordered same size Celsius Arctic and they fit perfectly with lots of toe space. So there is about a size difference between the two brands
