About Trainers

Indoor cycle trainers, or turbo trainers, as they are commonly called are one of the best training tools you can own. Turbo trainers enable you to keep to a training schedule even when the weather outside tries to stop you. They provide a safe, reliable and quality workout and cater for all fitness levels. There are a few various types of indoor cycle trainers, wind, magnetic, fluid and now motorized resistance units are used to make them as realistic as possible, some even connect to your PC so you can compete against other cyclists across the world. Wind resistance is the basic type and can be noisy, magnetic trainers are the next step and run with reduced noise levels. Fluid trainers are smooth and often run whisper quiet. Motorized units are found on the top of the range Virtual Reality turbo trainers from brands such as Tacx and even simulate descents so you can recover, just like on the road, these offer the most realistic feeling to riding of all the systems. Other items you may like to consider when training on one of the many turbo trainers are energy drinks, a heart rate monitor, a fan to keep a cool breeze and fresh air on you during your session, another essential often overlooked is the TV/DVD remote control, remember to keep it close by!

About the CycleOps brand

Cycleops are world famous for producing high quality cycle trainers. However, the company origins weren’t in cycling, believe it or not they started with producing curtain rods! The story goes that the Graber brothers sold their window products company and needed something to do. They experimented in their garage and came up with a best-selling bike rack. In 1989, Chris and Sara Fortune purchased the company when it was selling 80,000 bike racks a year. In 1990, a high-end brand of bike rack was launched, branded as “Saris.” Today Saris is a leading supplier to the bicycle industry in over 30 countries. The company expanded in 1999 by acquiring the Cycleops brand of bike trainer. As usual they set out to improve on the design and by 2001 they created a new trainer frame and in 2002 they launched the world’s first progressive resistance Cycleops magnetic trainer. It was in 2001 that they heard about a hub that could measure power output and they jumped at the chance to bring this product to cyclists. They bought the company that invented Powertap and started a new round of Cycleops cycling innovations.

Review from Cycling Plus

This entry-level trainer will suit those who just want to get on with it with the minimum of fuss. If you do want to play however, you can use one of five presets, which adjusts the trainer for different coarse load settings...the construction is solid without excessive weight and it took minutes to get it going out of the box...the multilingual instructions are to the point - "hold on to the bike when you release it out of the trainer or your bike will fall over was hopefully not aimed at our nanny-state adverse public...In use the Mag is typical of most magnetic drag units with some biopacing in the lower gears. The adjustable presets are very effective and dramatically alter the trainers feel taking it from a sludgy power tool to a free revvin' buzz bomb that's very characteristic of the original air-fan turbos.

In conclusion...

Basic and comprehensive, for £80 a winner!

Rating: 9/10

Review from 220 Triathlon

CycleOps' mag trainer offers great value for money. It's simple to set up and use, and boasts five setting adjustments on the main unit to vary your workouts...the Mag is relatively quiet, and the sturdy frame, like on its older brother the Fluid2, is more than welcome. When not in use it folds flat for easy storage or transportation.

In conclusion...

Good value for money trainer
