Instant energy gel! I had always used SIS GO during Olympic distance triathlons, but needed something that could give me a kick and keep me going when I decided to start Ironman events. I chose this product as PowerBar were sponsoring the race and it is awesome. Some say it's rather sweet, but I find it to be fine. Take the gel and then wash it down with some water is what I've found to work best. The product gave me no stomach problems or stitch problems and so it works great for me. Would buy more.....and more! 02 July 2010

Works, but taste is very average I'm sure they work, and the Power Bar package is prob the easiest to use, but the taste is nothing to look forward to. Certainly makes you drink straight after. 07 July 2010

Does the job Bought this product for long training rides and runs as part of my preparation for my first ironman. I use one per hour, and this seems to help me stay energised. I used this in my half ironman preparation race, on the bike and run, and I felt my energy levels were consistently high all the way round. Apple flavour was fine, and no problems digesting. No hesitation in using this in August for the full ironman. 04 July 2010

Small Pack, Big Power Having tried a number of Gels in the past, these small but perfectly formed Gels really deliver the right amount of boost when you need it. In a recent tri on T1, they really gave me the kick I needed for a PB on the bike. Banana and Vanilla are the best tasting. 28 June 2010

How much water do you take with these?

The Powerbar website suggests a few sips of water. The packaging used to state 200ml but the ones I bought the other day state 400ml. This is an awlful lot to take on while running a marathon. Its is 2 cups plus.

I have been using these for about 4 years and I only ever take 1-2 big sips of water but I regularly sip during any event ( usually sip every 5 mims ) from camel back.) I have never had any gut problems. If I drank 200 or 400 ml water at same time I think I would have gut problem then.

Answer:

While there might be sensible suggestions on the packing, in using them while training / racing, I find it is only really necessary to 'wash it down'. A good couple of large gulps is enough. As long as you are not scoffing too many gels, you will be fine.

A good couple of mouthfuls of water I'd say. Never had any problems. I can take 3 gels per hour to one 700ml bottle water / 0Kcal mix(Nuun, Zero etc)

I agree, 400ml seems a lot. I used this product in the bike and run during a half ironman recently. I always try to keep myself well hydrated , so I felt I only needed to take a few extra sips after each sachet, rather than another 400ml on top of what i was already drinking. If I'd drunk another 400ml per sachet, i'd have run out of water very quickly. So like anything else, because everyone is different, you should try this product out on training rides and see what hydration strategy works for you , before a race.

I stick to drinking a 750ml water bottle every hour and a gel on any ride over an hour or 10 minutes before a sprints over 5kms. Eating anything while riding requires water to waste it down and to help breathing. Gels appear no different.

The PowerBar website states that you need a few sips to a few mouthfulls of water, the packaging of the product states 400ml. I don't think anything is really set in stone, if you are well hydrated you probably don't need to take so much water during the exercise as recommended but this depends on the persons water requirements and how much they have prepared for the activity before hand. Do what you are comfortable with, if 400ml of water is too much to take you should be fine with the 200ml previously recommended by Powerbar.

Bike Food Raw Natural Energy Bars are gluten free. Can recommend them.
I also use High 5 energy drink powder.
Theres nothing worse than picking up/ordering sports bars only to discover they aren't GF :(

Answer:

You can buy these individually from most bike shops however that would be the most expensive way to purchase them.
Maybe Wiggle could request mixed boxes if they can convince themselves and manufacturers that it would be a viable proposition.
Mean while I suggest you take the plunge and buy in bulk after all the sachets do have a long shelf life..
