With this quill stem you can convert your old stem to a new threadless stem, and it doesn't even cost more than 15 quid! It's easy to install, done within half an hour. Profile Quill To Threadless Stem Converter I love my old bike but the old quill neck was dead. I didn't want to try and fit the new front endsystem onto the old bike, an absolute nightmare. I bought this with some doubts. it was a piece of cake to fit, and gives all the versatility of the modern adjustable systems. So easy to convert for a few quid. Absolutely rapt, and a lot more rigid than the old system ever was. I read one review where the buyer said it was hard to fit into the stem. I wonder if they'd taken the plastic cover off. Mine fitted so easily into the old stem and it looks like it's just part of the bike. I alsu read a couple of reviews that said the top was a bit lurid. I didn't think so. 29 June 2010

So easy to fit and get a new look on a tired old bike. Now I can get any stem length or angle I won't for my winter bike and not be limited to small amount of quill stems available. As some have said, black would have been nice, but it looks good on my red frame along with a black Cinelli Vai road stem. BTW, took me a few minutes to figure out that you have to use your old wedge bolt piece from your old stem in place of the large plastic covered piece supplied with this. Thought at first it was too big for my frame. Maybe some instructions on/in their packaging might be of help. 22 October 2009

What is this for

what part of the bike is this part for as I am looking for a bolt that holds the handle bars to the bike frame.

This is to allow installation of a modern designed 'aheadset' stem (that clamps around the steerer tube) onto a older style bike frame that uses a quill type stem. I don't think it is what you need, unless you have a newer stem to fit as well.

I would have thought a good local bike shop will have a bolt lying around for the cost of a packet of biscuits.

Quill adaptors convert the older quill style steerers into the ahead type, this part fits inside the fork and gives a mounting point for an ahead stem.

The 1" is the ID of your forks so the actual quil is 7/8" if that helps, if your forks are less than this I doubt it will fit ?

There is a long bolt goes right down to the quill. So long as you can use that bolt, you can use any top cap of sufficient diameter.

Unfortunately the top cap is the anchor point for the converter so I can't recommend you change it. Other caps may not be the correct shape or may not be strong enough.

Do you have a quill stem extender for a stem that is 7eighths of an inch in diameter? This is a Raleigh, bought in France I think.

This will fit, my quil stem was 7/8" in diameter and it worked a treat, the 1" refers to the fork steerer the quil fits into

Answer:

Your best bet is to buy a quill stem converter and then use a normal stem the length you require. Otherwise it's a scour on the www for old bits.

Yes there is enough length in the adaptor to have it at different heights, I have about 30mm showing above my headset and this is absolutely fine

6cm from the nut up to the top of the stem. The equivalent of about 18mm of spacers (measured from nut up to bottom of stem)

I can say for sure but i would be disinclined to protrude the larger diameter piece at the top at all. In other words i think you should slide it in as far as it will go. If i do that there is enough space for me to get one spacer under the aheadstem.

If you protruded it, even if it was safe (which i wouldn't really like to suggest), it would certainly look pretty ugly!

Will this stem convert a bmx quill stem?

Hi i wish to convert my bmx from a quill stem to a thread less stem and have a bmx stem holding my bars.

is this converter wide enough for use on a bmx frame because i have seen other converters only suitable for rode bikes.
