About Seat Posts
A good quality seat post will save weight and hold your saddle securely. Seatposts are made in various materials, alloy and carbon being the two most common, alloy posts are lightweight, durable and cost efficient, while carbon posts are the popular choice for top end machines. Seat posts vary in where they hold the saddle relative to their own centre line so make sure you have enough adjustment on your saddle rails to allow for this or you could end up with your saddle too far forwards. A seat post needs to fit your frame exactly and are measured by as little as 0.2mm. When choosing a new one, either read off the measurement from your old seat post or measure it carefully with a vernier calliper. Make sure you lubricate the frame (unless they're carbon fibre) before insertion or you'll struggle to get it out again.

Magazine reviews for Race Face Deus XC Seat Post 2008
Review from Singletrack
This post has Race Face's new independently adjustable clamping system. Much like their previously-much-loved XY design, adjusting the saddle's fore-aft position is totally seperate to adjusting the tilt.
In conclusion...
Despite being quite light (240g for the27.2) the post is still very, very stiff. I've been running one at maxiumium height extension on my dinkiest bike and i can definitely notice the lack of flex. very reassuring, and sure to be a favourite with XC racer types.

Review from Bikeradar
We wondered what on earth RaceFace were thinking when we first saw their seatposts with cantilevered collars, but they've proved themselves superb seat shafts.
The system looks complicated but, by separating the saddle clamp mechanism from the saddle angle adjustment, it's incredibly easy to use. It handles 7 or 8mm rails no problem while giving half an inch of lay-back. The triple-butted post seems plenty tough and it's pretty light too (a Next SL version with a carbon fi bre shaft and 15g less weight is also available for £99.95). We've had no problems with slipping, squeaking or loosening either, despite running samples for over a year. Pricing is fair for a top quality post and there are enough sizes to fit most bikes.
In conclusion...
Ingenious yet practical premium post with useful lay-back
