Magazine reviews for Shimano HG70 7/8 Speed Chain

Shimano HG70 7/8 Speed Chain

Review from Cycling Plus

The HG70 (as in Shimano Hyperglide) is compatible with Shimano 7 and 8 speed systems. This means it is suitable for 1999 105 drivetrains and earlier as well as 8-speed Deore and LX mountain bike drivetrains. As you'd expect it works best when itegrated with Shimano systems. The 7 and 8 speed compatibility means the chain's going to be more common on older bikes but it's a small price to pay for a replacement chain that works well. It uses Shimano's special joining pins, there are two supplied with the chain.

In conclusion...

Old but still going strong

Any 9-speed-specific chain can be used with the Tiagra kit. It's okay to use others, but the Shimano chains are as good as any in terms of longevity and performance, as long as they're regularly cleaned and re-lubed.

In conclusion...

The Shimano chain will last the distance and give high performance

Magazine reviews for Wippermann Intrax 7Z1 Anti-Rust 5-6-7 Speed Chain

Wippermann Intrax 7Z1 Anti-Rust 5-6-7 Speed Chain
List Price £10.99
Wiggle Price
£10.99

Review from Cycling Plus

The unusual look of the 7Z1 is doen to the aggressive anti rust coating and the chain has been specifically designed for hub geared bikes or singlespeeds with narrow sprockets. It features a snap-on link connector for easyu installation. At £10.99 it's a sound investment for any city bike running hub gears and should withstand regular hours locked up outside. With over 115 years of history Connex chains are made by Wipperman, who, amongst other, supply chains to BMW so they should certainly know what makes a good chain by now.

In conclusion...

The ideal fit-and-forget chain for hub gears or single speeds.

Review from Cycling Plus

Fitting is a doddle with the KMC missing link system (very similar to SRAM's powerlink in use)...The gold finish of the (blingin') x10sl is not only good looking but also has a titanium nitride coating, which is claimed to improve the wear...in use, the best thing aboput any chain is that you don't notice it, and that is exactly what i found with the KMC. It's as quick shifting and smooth running as the Campag c10 it replaced, and after a couple of months' use it hasn't stretched or stiffened and still looks relatively good - not as pristine as it was as new, but that's to be expected.

In conclusion...

An excellent, hardwearing chain with a great finish - a winner!

Rating: 9/10

Review from Cycling Plus

If you fancy adding a flamboyant touch to your pride an joy you can't do better than fitting the gold X10SL. Slotted plates and hollow pins keep the weight down to race level and for its low race weight it's exceptionally durable. The X10SL is Shimano and Campagnolo compatible, we've had one of these running on the latter system for well over six months. It has been silent, silky smooth and has kept its goldy looking chain demeanour. The X10SL comes with a tool-free connector link and if gold is a bit too garish for you then a silver version is also available.

In conclusion...

Very light, looks great, works even better.

Magazine reviews for KMC Z510 HX Silver Chain

KMC Z510 HX Silver Chain
List Price £11.50

£11.50

Review from road.cc

KMC's Z510HX chain is Intended primarily for the rigours of BMX racing and internal hub transmissions, but this beefy 112 link chain also lends itself particularly well to fixed and single speed applications.

The anti drop design, counters chain sag and suits road conversions, although isn't so effective on frames with vertical ends (better served by a half link design that allows the creation of a "magic gear" to achieve good chain line).

Fitting the chain is easy and intuitive, although the chunky "Mushroom" pins made cutting to correct length something of a feat using a traditional chain breaker. However, once split it's simply a case of popping the ends together courtesy of the reusable tool free link. This felt quite insubstantial and I feared it might split under load but so far despite concerted effort I have no problems on that score.

Even though it's not rustproof in the commonly accepted sense, the chain's silver finish has lost none of its lustre despite constant exposure to wet, salt strewn winter roads. Similarly, despite pairing with a very modest sprocket and sparing lubrication it remains surprisingly refined.

I reserve judgement on the magical properties of the "Stretch Proof" mushroom pin; not least as chains don't stretch-they wear. However, on the strength of the past month's slavery it would appear a bargain upgrade for lower end production fixers and other bikes in hard service.

In conclusion...

Solid, dependable and inexpensive chain for hard working steeds

Magazine reviews for Campagnolo Chorus 11 Speed Chain

Campagnolo Chorus 11 Speed Chain
List Price £39.99

Wiggle Price
£35.99

Review from Cycling Plus

Our main criticism of the Chorus chain is not of the product itself but of the fact that you need Campag's dedicated - and very expensive - chain tool to remove it (though Pedro's have recently created a cheaper version).

Campag's 11-speed chain is narrower than their 10-speed version (5.5mm compared to 5.9mm), but is actually stronger.

It doesn't have Record's hollow pins, but other than that is identical: nickel PTFE (better known as Teflon) surface for reduced friction and the same redesigned Ultra-Shift outer links. The weight difference over Record? Just 15g.

In conclusion...

Smooth shifting and only 15g heavier than the Record version
