Unlike XTR, XT Shadow is the same excellent value as conventional XT, which also comes in low normal and high normal spring types, so you can have whatever style of shift you want. Again Shadow is proving more difficult to set up initially than conventional mechs, but we reckon the hidden profile, lack of frame knock and dlightly lighter weight make it the option to go for. Fluorine-coated pins and sealed cartridge bearing jockey wheels give it a slick, quiet shift, and we've properly ground and gouged some mechs in big alpine offs with no ill effects.
Sweet, slick low-profile shifting, once it's all set up right
Unlike the original Saint behemoth of a rear mech, this new unit embraces low profile Shadow technology and ditches the built-in axle. We've clobbered ours a few times without any shifting problems or damage to it - this new unit is likely to outlast a lighter mech. The spring tension is stronger than on previous Shimano mechs, which makes the shifting heavier, but it's as solid as a rock through the rough stuff. The general build is ready to take a few hits. We're really impressed with the durability, function and appearance of the renovated Saint kit.
Fantastic shifting for hardcore riders, well worth a look
