Tasty and nutritious training partner
These are some of our favourite sports bars; they're packed with energy, they taste good, and they're easy to eat while riding. They come in four different flavours. All the bars are oats-based and contain around 45g of carbs, both simple and complex so you get an immediate and sustained release of energy. They're also low in fat - just 2%. Whereas some sports bars are really difficult to get down while you're working hard in the saddle, Torq bars are soft and moist, so they're really easy to chew and swallow. They're also good for replacing energy after a ride.
Highly munchable sports bars that are packed with energy
Torq are a UK-based company and manufacture all four flavours on these shores. The texture is definitely classic energy bar - a sticky, dense and very fruity flapjack - but the ingredients are 100 per cent natural, fairly traded and suitable for vegans. Saturated fat levels are very low at around 0.5 per cent and the bar also contains Torq's hidden weapon, ribose, which actively assists muscle recovery at a cellular level.
It won't make you fat and will get your muscles on the mend
Fortunately Torq has done its homework and the bars live up to thier 'moist and chewy' tagline and the flavours are great. And unlike many bars, the packets are easy to open, even with a gloved hand and teeth while riding...the raspberrry and apple is fruity and almost refreshing to eat...the pinapple and ginger flavour is amazing, it tastes just like ginger cake.
Having used these bars as hilltop snacks, as office munchies and while racing the three peaks, I'm very impressed with them.
Gone are the days when energy bars could barely be stomached...these Torq bars are very high in carbohydrate, very low in fat and stuffed full of clever ingredients.
A seriously tasty chewy fuel bar that's good to eat before and after excercise as well as in between
Blurring the boundary between confectionary and an energy bar, Powerbar Rides have good energy levels but the taste and texture of a normal chocolate bar (if you ate one of their peanut chocolate bars with your eyes closed you'd swear it was a Snickers). They're superb when you need a treat rnid-ride and don't want to eat something that's purely an energy food.
A sweet treat that will fuel your legs but full out your waist
Here is a bar with ingredients you can recognise. A mixture of dried fruit, oats and nuts provides a lot of carbohydrate, and the low fat content means this bar would be quickly digested. It's soft and easy to eat. Not as sticky as pure apricots, not as dry as oats. The makers characterise it as 'fuel for adventure'.The sugars (from rice syrup and apricots) will be absorbed rapidly and starchy carbohydrate (from oatmeal and oats) will provide a sustained flow of sugars into the bloodstream.
The good quality ingredients and absence of unnecessary preservatives or colourings make this a bar you could eat as a regular pre-ride snack, or to keep you going on a long ride
Mule Bars were developed by a guy who wasn't impressed with the selection of energy bars available. He started making his own in the kitchen and after feedback from friends has now got what is probably the tastiest bar on the market.Mule now has a selection of six different flavours. The bars are wrapped in a loose package that is easy to open and get the bar out of while on the move. The consistency of the Mule Bar is neither too hard to bite off or too soft that they break and fall apart. Even in sub-zero temperatures the bars were easily chewable.Mule flavours are distinctive yet not overpowering and do not have any after taste.
The Mule Bar is a little pricey for training at around £1.30 a bar, but for racing they are far superior in both taste and operation to the competition
