About Anti Pollution Masks

In 2005, it was estimated that approximately 1,000 accelerated deaths and 1,000 extra respiratory hospital admissions occurred in London as a result of PM10 air pollution. In truth, Londoners only have to see what lorries and buses are kicking out to be sold into the concept of protecting their health. Masks provide the only way to block out lung irritants and other pollutants, many of which are carcinogens. So what can an anti-pollution mask do to help? Masks help prevent lung irritation and cancer. Many different pollutants - when mixed together - can cause irritation to respiratory systems. Wearing a mask helps to prevent cancer as there are known carcinogenic agents such as pyrene and benzene present in petrol fumes. There are also less weighty reasons for wearing a mask. The masks are an awareness statement to the other road users in cleaning up the environment.

About the Respro brand

Respro product designer Harry Cole had "in your face" experience of exhaust fumes and city smog as a London cycle courier and this is still a significant and growing problem. In 1990, Respro launched the City mask, the first cyclists pollution mask and it is still in demand today. Over the last decade, awareness of air pollution has grown and now cyclists can choose from a wider range of styles and filters to accomodate more individual needs. Respro masks are supplied with replaceable filters and exhalation valves to keep the inside of the mask well ventilated.

respro I do a lot of cycling 250- 350 miles a week i have suffered sore throats and repeat chest infections from car and truck fumes, the short and tall of it is the respro does work since buying no sore throats and very very few chest infections (your gonna get some that's life) i was skeptical until i checked the filter at the end of the second week compared to a new one i purchased in readiness, It was filthy and i mean filthy it had become very difficult to breath through so it had to be changed. would i recommend it from a health point of view definitely . the down sides are hard to breath through if your pushing it hard near to your max on uphill climbs or your trying to sustain a good avg speed over your workout, It also needs to be deeper to cover the nose and fit under the chin properly i purchased a large i wear glasses with mine they stay on no problem But do steam up at traffic lights. so to combat this problem on the breathing side of things i wear mine in traffic and built up congested areas , and when we get into the country and open lanes it comes off i just pull it down so its ready to be popped back on if the traffic gets built up again at any stage once the mask is off in the country lanes i found i can breath that easy its amazing its like resistance training for your lungs when on but once its off in clear air you can zoom along . the cons i have listed apply to myself as every one is a different shape it may fit you better than it did me DON'T let it put you off trying one out, once you've seen whats not going in your lungs anymore you'll put up with it trust me, i wear mine every ride and my cycle buddy whose asthmatic is getting one asap if you ride in the city its a no brainer. useful kit I bought the sportsta mask 1 month ago and have been using it ever since on my daily cycling commute in city traffic. Discomfort is minimal, even when breathing hard. I certainly feel the difference in my lungs afterwards: either it's very effective or the placebo effect is awesome! 12 October 2011

Medium or large they're your only options I believe adult large women and kids medium if you buy one get some replacement filters as well in readiness to swap out the old ones it takes a bit of getting used to but they are worth it

Generally, medium will be suitable for the average size women and large for the average size man. Thats what the website says, I went along for the large and I'd agree.

What are the main differences of the Respro Sportsta, City and Techno Anti Pollution Masks?

Which mask (filter) has the best overall effects? I ride about 50km per day in the urban centre of Berlin. What mask would you commend?

I commute to work through the centre of London (15km per day) and decided the best mask was the Sportsta with anti-pollution filters. The Sportsta has vents at the side so you don't suffocate when you're in need of air (though when it's very wet, this function fails and you have to remove to breathe - though this rarely happens). I started with normal filters, but looking at the manufacturer website, this was not specifically designed for urban cycling. The anti-pollution filters have activated carbon so pollutants and particles adsorb to this instead of going into your lungs. As an asthmatic, I've found this combination fundamental. According to the site I change the filter once a month, and you notice the dark marks where the pollutants have been trapped by the filter.

The Sportsta filter offers the least breathing resistance but offers limited filtration. The City offers better filtration and is more suitable for commuters. The Techno mask offers Sub-Micron filtration as well as all the features of the City mask in order to give the best filtration of the three.
