The compact chainset, with a wide range of sprockets on the cassette, gives you a large choice of gears for speed and for climbing. Many sportives events incorporate some nasty/steep climbs on the route so having a compact chainset makes life a little bit easier.

About the Ridley brand
Flanders, the Flemish region of Belgium is infamous for serving up the harshest cycling conditions where driving rain, cobbled non-category climbs, snow and ice are the norm for its 6,000 racing clubs. This place, the pounding heart of a passionate cycling nation where the most revered Spring Classics unfold, is the cold steel anvil where flesh and bone are forged into the greatest racers of all time. This is Belgium, home to Ridley Bikes, and it is here where our products are engineered, hammered into raw form by the roads themselves, and where we refine them in competition. This is Ridley. We are Belgium.

you are of similar proportion to me. i am a 34.5inside leg, can fit a medium, but ideally would be a large frame, but need a shorter headtube. hope this helps.
I'm 175cm tall with inside leg measurement of 78.5cm.
I currently ride a Bianchi Nirvone 7, 55cm Frame, which is fabulously comfortable . Looking at advancing to a Carbon bike and the Ridley Orion seems outstanding value...but I want to make sure I choose the right frame size. I've never ridden a bike with a frame size below 55cm. So is the Ridley design somehow different or should I opt for the Medium? The Ridley sizing information is somewhat confusing...
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Graeme.
