The gloves are quite stretchy so I would assess whether you have large, medium or small hands, irrespective of your gender. I bought the medium size for my brother who has fairly normal sized hands, but my bucket hands could get in them too comfortable, so there is room for error.
I think the sizing charts are not unique to each product and are 'wiggle wide' if that makes sense.
Don't know about the hat sizes though, but do any of us have massively different head sizes?
