Eye protection is vital for most outdoor activities, especially cycling as debri and spray from the road can be flicked up into your face. A pair of good quality sports sunglasses will help to keep the wind, insects, rain, spray and dust out of your eyes. Dark ones will cut down on light so you don't have to squint to see where you're going. All glasses should eliminate harmful UV rays, protecting your retinas from damage. So that you can protect your eyes in all conditions, glasses with interchangeable lenses are useful. Either that, or get yourself one pair for bright, dull and dark light conditions.

The adjustable temples and nose bridge meant every tester was able to get these to fit perfectly - quite a task to accomplish so easily. Compatible with clip-in prescription inserts, our test shades came fitted with the ImpactX photochromic lens that proved tough, flexible, and reactive to changes in light.
If you have shallow cheek bones you might find the bottom edge of the lens is a little too far from your face though, so it's best to try on before you buy with these. In terms of performance and adjustability though, they're up there with the best

There is more than one way to ensure that you've got the correct lens for any given occasion: you can buy glasses that come with a choice of lenses, or you can get photochromatic lenses which change colour chemically as the amount of UV light increases.
These initially clear lenses start to darken after just a few seconds' exposure to UV light, the full process taking a few minutes. It's quick enough that if you're cycling from strong light to shade you never need to remove your shades.
We put this pair to the test during a Grand Fondo that started out under heavy clouds before the Italian sun broke through. The Rydons coped perfectly.
