A pedometer is a device that measures the number of footsteps you take. It does this by using sensors that detect motion and impact. Pedometers are usually mounted using a secure belt clip to the waist, or worn like a watch on your wrist.
Pedometers help you monitor your daily physical activity and are a good motivator to help you walk more. If you are making less than 5000 steps a day you would be considered sedentary. 5000-7499 steps per day is considered low active. 7500-9999 steps per day is considered somewhat active. 10,000 – 12,500 steps per day is active. Finally, 12,500 steps and over is considered very active. A Pedometer provides you with some helpful performance benchmarks which you can track and review on a daily basis.
Before buying a pedometer it’s important to determine what kind of model is best suited to your needs. There are a variety of different models on the market with various performance features such as; total daily steps, pulse monitor, stopwatch, workout tracking, distance monitoring, goal setting and calorie measurement. Some devices are also compatible with web and mobile applications.
