About Car Racks

Travelling by car with your bike is much easier if you can carry it on the outside. It doesn't take up any room inside the vehicle and you don't get mud and grease all over your upholstery. The simplest racks to use fit onto the rear of the car. Most grip the vehicle with plastic-coated hooks which must be positioned where they can spread the load. With all these racks, it's vital that the rack is firmly attached to the car and it's best if you then fix the bikes to the car itself, not just to the rack. If you have a tow-ball, use it! That way, the rack won't even touch the car and the whole setup is really secure. If your car has roof rails, you can mount cycle carriers to them. This works well but be careful when entering car parks with height barriers! Whichever type you choose, make sure you lock the bikes to the car if you want to keep them.

About the Saris brand

Home for CycleOps/Saris is in an old farmhouse in bike-crazy Madison, Wisconsin. Their production facilities are behind the farmhouse. Believe it or not their origins are in curtain rods. Two brothers had a company that made window products. After the Graber brothers sold their company they needed something to do. They experimented in their garage and came up with a bike rack. They sold lots of racks under the Graber name and then sold the company. That was sometime back in 1973. Chris and Sara Fortune purchased the company in 1989 when it was selling 80,000 bike racks a year. In 1990 and 1991 Sara and Chris introduced a high end brand of bike rack, renaming them “Saris.” Today Saris is a leading supplier to the bicycle industry in 30 countries. The company expanded in 1999 by acquiring the Cycleops brand of bike trainer. As usual they set out to improve on the design and by 2001 they created a new trainer frame and in 2002 they debuted the world’s first progressive resistance magnetic trainer. It was in 2001 that they heard about a hub that could measure power output and they jumped at the chance to bring this product to cyclists. They bought the company that invented Powertap and started a new round of innovations Dede Demet won the gold medal at the 2002 Montreal World Cup on her powertap.

Superb bit of kit superb bit of kit, infinately adjustable, perfect for any car even my Mazda MX5 with boot rack! Easy to use, easy to fit, extremly stable on the car, bike dosn't move on the rack, even able to open boot with rack attached! recently had to take my bike to a race 4hr drive away & the bones performed perfectly even at motorway speeds for most of the journey, no bike movement due to the down bar strap, very impressed!! price, maybe a little expensive but worth it as long as it lasts a few years of regular use! 01 July 2010

A good strong rack This is a really sturdy rack which has excellent strong straps to securely attach bikes to. It has six straps three either side to attach to car which also means a rigid fix to the car. It is quick and easy to attach once you have done it once and folds down to a easily manageable size. The only down side is the tighten screws on the arms are plastic and not as strong a tighten up as would be with metal ones. 12 June 2010

At last! I've used various boot mounted bike racks before, and they've all had the same problem - they all "hang" from the top straps, i.e. all the weight is on two fabric straps, meaning your pride and joy never seems that secure. Many a car journey I have constantly been looking in the rear view mirror to ensure nothing has fallen off!!! Well, the answer to my woes, thankfully, lies in this bike rack... The Saris Bones is different to all other racks in that the main structure is a long, thick, tubular, aluminum "spine" which sits horizontally. From this extend 5 plastic "ribs" - one extends vertically and rests against the rear window, two extend downwards and rest on the bumper, the last two extend outwards and support the bike. All of the ribs can rotate around the central spine, then engage in "teeth" to hold them in place. Each rib has large thumb screw which holds them in place, but doesn't take any "strain". Finally you have 3 long straps that pass through the aluminum tube, connecting at top, sides and base of the car boot. So, the weight of the bikes is taken on the two lower ribs, which have pivoting rubber feet. There is no weight placed on the straps at all - they are simply there to hold the rack in position. Another great aspect of this rack is that the cross bar of the bike (which is the part of the bike resting on the rack) is held in two rubberised straps, which do not mark or scratch. I used an inferior rack previously which scratched my bike after one journey.... thankfully the Saris does not do this. So, in summary... very easy to use (you even get stickers to "mark" where you position the ribs.... meaning you can collapse and reassemble very quickly)... very strong ... and keeps your bike safe and sound. If you need a 2 bike rack... get this one! If you need a 3 bike rack... get the Bones 3! 15 May 2010

Will the Saris Bones 2 fit a VW Golf GTi Mk5 (08) with spoiler?

The Saris vehicle fit guide shows the Saris Bones 2 is ok for VW Golf (08) but doesn't indicate if it will fit the GTi model specifically.

If it won't fit, any suggestions for alternatives?

If the spoiler arrangement on the Golf is anything like the Scirocco then yes (see photo). But ensure that most of the weight is transferred to the lower legs and not the top straps at attach to the spoiler. The advantage of the Bones is that the legs provide weight distribution and the straps are merely for stability.

Yes. You can adust the supporting arm so the rack sits high on the back of the boot. Should be able to clear a spoiler, as long as it's a subtle factory spoiler and not a foot high boy racer spoiler!

no they will not hit each other.. there is a strap that holds the down tube on each bike... once in place my bike does not move at all...even over bumps on the road
