Saturae understand that different riders are looking for different things, their aero-optimised 50mm deep rim shape will benefit the TT rider or road racer in competition. But if your challenge is that epic Gran Fondo or Sportive then the C50 will suit you too. The aero benefits will allow you to make the most of your energy and the ride quality that only comes from a handbuilt wheel makes the C50 a truly comfortable wheelset too.
They also combined a lightweight magnesium alloy hub shell with their own roller bearing system. Saturae call it the FONA system and their rollers are sealed against the elements and unlike traditional cartridge bearings the smoothness means they feel like your floating on air.
Everything that goes into the C50 wheelset is built in-house at their facility. From the carbon lay-up to the molding and finishing to the spoke lacing and final hand torquing. Magazine reviews for Saturae C50 Full Carbon Clincher Wheelset
Review from Cycling Plus
Saturae is a new name to the market, and if these great value full-carbon aero clinchers are anything to go by, this British brand is a welcome arrival.
The C50 rim is 50mm deep and a 'modern' 22mm wide, with a tapered shape but with a blunted leading edge on the inner.
The brake track, often the Achilles heel in full-carbon rims, is specially developed and finished to increase and speed up heat dissipation. Saturae has also specified a special high-heat-resistant rim tape to protect the innertube.
The C50s are fully assembled and stressed and trued by hand, and each comes with a QC passport number, which even details individual spoke tensions. That means Saturae can offer a warranty and quick crash replacement service. Home mechanics will also be happy that Saturae uses off-the-peg DT Swiss spokes and external spoke nipples on the rim's inner edge, so no special tools are needed.
Out on the road they feel stiff and flex free, the front wheel particularly impressive thanks in part to the wide-flanged hub that creates a nicely triangulated shape yet still allows the low spoke-count radial lacing.
At 1678g for our test pair (claimed 1650g) they aren't as light as the likes of Mavic, Fulcrum, Zipp, Reynolds or Enve - but then the Saturaes are only a fraction of the price. And like all good aero designs, once wound up to speed the C50s do a great job of holding onto it.
Braking is good using the supplied Shimano Dura-Ace carbon-specific pads; in the dry they aren't grabby or noisy and it's easy to regulate your speed without the rim snatching, though performance tails off a little in the wet, taking a bit more time to clear moisture before the brakes start to scrub speed.
We've used them in all weathers and on plenty of surfaces, even some excursions onto hard-packed dirt, and we have to say these are made of tough stuff. The build quality is excellent and they've stayed true and evenly tensioned throughout the test.
In strong crosswinds you can feel the effect on the tall rims, but there's none of the violent snapping you'd get from older V-shaped designs; it's reasonably even pressure that's easy to counter.
Great value carbon clinchers with real performance benefits.
HIGHS Price, build quality, speed
LOWS Wet weather braking just okay
