Lezyne Mini Drive LED Front Light
49.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/20-Mini-Drive.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/lezyne-mini-drive-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 66g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 150LM
- Settings: 5
- Charge Time: 3 Hrs
- Run Time: 1 - 4.5 Hrs
- RRP: £49.99
The Minidrive from Lezyne is still impressive, despite its small size. The power output is strong and will attract allot of attention from oncoming vehicles. Not ideal to be used as a stand-alone off road light however. I’d recommend this light for commuting, un-lit country roads or as an additional light source or backup.
-
Lezyne Power Drive LED Front Light
79.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/19-Power-Drive.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/lezyne-power-drive-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 120g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 300LM
- Settings: 4
- Charge Time: 4 Hrs
- Run Time: 2 - 6Hrs
- RRP: £79.99
Lezyne's Powerdrive is the Superdrive's little brother. Shorter in length and a little lighter, this light still delivers a big light for a tiny body. I would steer away from using this as a stand-alone light for off road riding, but a superb on-road light for un-lit roads and city commuting.
-
Lezyne Super Drive LED Front Light
99.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/18-SUPER-DRIVE.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/lezyne-super-drive-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 126g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 450 lm
- Settings: 4
- Charge Time: 4 Hrs
- Run Time: 1.5 - 5 Hrs
- RRP: £99.99
The Lezyne Superdrive was one of the big surprises of all of the lights here. A small package that seems barely big enough to hold a few AA batteries, but with 450 lumens of power, this small package has a very big impact out on the road/trail. Sure, lights can be more powerful and offer a beam more impressive, but this light is less than £100 and makes the most out of every single lumen available. Lezyne is new to the lighting market, but the amount of light this little contender delivers makes it an excellent choice for road, commuting and as a beginner off road light. 1.5hr burn time on high, means your off road rides will be short, but non-the-less impressive.

Cateye HL-EL610 LED Single Shot +
99.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/17-EL-610RC-SINGLE-SHOT-PLUS.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/cateye-el610-med.jpg
- System weight: 280g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 1500cd
- Settings: High/Low/Fl.
- Charge Time: 4hrs
- Run Time: 3/9/36hrs
- RRP: £99.99
Ideal for city commuting and on un-lit country lanes. Beam is wide spread for maximum visibility by motorists, rather than more concentrated for trail use. The light can be seen from a greater angle than almost any other light in this test, making it ideal for on-road use, however the beam isn’t strong enough on its periphery to be able to see low-hanging debris or trail obstacles.

Moon X-Power 500 Rechargeable

http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/moon-xp500-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 143.5
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 500 lm
- Settings: 5
- Charge Time: 3Hrs
- Run Time:2-4Hrs
- RRP: £119.99
The Moon XP500 offers 500 lumens of power for a staggeringly low price. Moon lights
are new to Wiggle and offer high performance at a lower price to some of the competition.
The plastic/resin bodies are suitable for the task in hand, but the performance
is very impressive. These 500 lumens are spread evenly and effectively across the
trail. Battery life on high is long enough for most night-time rides.

Exposure Joystick Mk6 + Mount
164.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/10-JOYSTICK-Mk6-Black-with-Helmet-Mount-kit.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-joystick-mk6-med.jpg
- System weight: 103g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 325 lm
- Settings: 3
- Charge Time: 4 Hrs
- Run Time: 3-24 Hrs
- RRP: £164.99
The Joystick is a very popular choice of helmet light. The power outputted by this light, allows you to look right and left on your ride, to ensure you spot your turn. 325 lumens is enough for most riders when used as part of a combo with a handlebar light. As with the Diablo, you’d best avoid this light if you intend to use this light stand-alone for off road night riding, as the beam and power output, isn’t ideal for stand-alone use. However, the Joystick is an excellent choice for commuters and road cyclists, looking for an attention grabbing light, that will provide vision down un-lit roads.

Hope Vision 2 LED Front Light
195.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/3-2010-2-LED-Vision-Universal-UK.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/hope-HLN2LUDUK-med.jpg
- System weight: 280g
- Battery Pack: Yes
- Max power: 480 lm
- Settings: 4
- Charge Time: 3 Hrs
- Run Time: 2-30 Hrs
- RRP: £195.00
This small package offers a modest 480 lumens but throws the light a long way down the trail. Where lots of the power is reasonably concentrated, you are presented with a crisp white beam that shows plenty of detail, but doesn’t offer peripheral light coverage as well as the new Hope R4, which actually offers a broader beam with over 100 lumens less power. At less than £200 however, the Vision 2 is a viable option that will get you into off road mountain biking at night with all the light you need.
-
Exposure Diablo Mk3 Front Light
200.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/14-DIABLO-MK3.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-diablo-mk3-med.jpg
- System weight: 124g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 975
- Settings: 3
- Charge Time: 4Hrs
- Run Time: 1-10 Hrs
- RRP: £200.00
The Diablo offers plenty of power and is an ideal companion to any handlebar light. The Diablo comes with a handlebar mount, but I’d very much recommend this light to be used on your helmet (mount provided) to offer a greater degree of light concentration, exactly where you’re looking. This beam offers little in the way of peripheral coverage, but a wide and powerful central beam, will enable you to see any detail in the trail ahead, meaning the darkness needn’t slow you down!
With only 1hr burn time on high setting, you will be wise to use the medium setting for most of your ride, upping the output for technical single track. A competent main light, but ideal when used with a bar-mounted light also.

-
Exposure Race Mk6 Front Light
224.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/13-RACE-Mk6.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-race-mk6-med.jpg
- System weight: 225g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 645 lm
- Settings: 3
- Charge Time: 8 Hrs
- Run Time: 3-24Hrs
- RRP: £224.99
In its 6th generation, the Exposure Race Mk6 is an incredibly popular light that offers excellent value for money. With 645 lumens, people might scoff when compared to lights with higher outputs, but on high, this beam is very versatile and will last 3hrs. The beam pattern focuses most of its power centrally, but allows plenty of light to fill the periphery. For real-world riders, cycling average trails, who want a bright, reliable light will be very happy with this light.

Moon X-Power 1000 Rechargeable
224.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/6-XP1000-1000-Lumen.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/moon-xp1000-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 408.5g
- Battery Pack: yes
- Max power: 1000 lm
- Settings: 5
- Charge Time:4 Hrs
- Run Time: 2.5-15 Hrs
- RRP: £224.99
The Moon XP1000 offers ample power and light spread for any off/ road night riding
adventures. An even spread of beam leaves no area of darkness hidden. An impressive
light for an impressive budget. As with all the Moon lights featured here, the light
unit is housed within a plastic/resin body and doesn’t have the solid feel of some
of the more expensive lights here. However, with the difference in price between
this light and a comparative light from another brand, it’s somewhat hard to justify
any added costs.

Exposure Strada Mk3 Front Light
244.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/9-STRADA-Mk3.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-strada-mk3-med.jpg
- System weight: 277g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 645 lm
- Settings: 2
- Charge Time: 8 Hrs
- Run Time: 3-8 Hrs
- RRP: £224.00
Exposure's Strada light is a popular light amongst racers and those who like to ride anything but slow. Supplied with a remote, you are able to switch between modes without removing your hands from the handlebars (other lights require the use of a function button on the light unit). The beam pattern of this light is designed to increase your peripheral vision, lighting up the verge, or edge of single track as well as showing great detail dead ahead. Superb for tight, twisty and technical trails, or driver friendly country roads.
-
Hope Vision R4 LED Front Light
250.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/2-New-2011-R4-LED-Vision-Universal-UK.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/hope-vision-r4-led-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 235g
- Battery Pack:Yes
- Max power: 1000 lm
- Settings: 6
- Charge Time: 3hrs
- Run Time:1:15 – 8:00Hrs
- RRP: £250.00
The Hope R4 offers 40 lumens more power than the Hope Vision 4. It’s mainly the
slightly different beam that improves the vision of this light beam. The central
beam doesn’t seem as strong as some similarly powered lights, but the added peripheral
vision acquired by the beam pattern is superb, meaning no nasty surprises when flooring
it through your favourite woods. A revised mounting bracket and machined body look
great and seem light and strong. The battery neatly mounts underneath the stem.
-
Exposure Toro Mk3 Front Light
274.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/15-TORO-MK3.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-tora-mk3-med.jpg
- System weight: 278g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 975 lm
- Settings: 3
- Charge Time: 12 Hrs
- Run Time:3-24 Hrs
- RRP: £274.99
The Toro offers a focussed beam pattern that’s lower to the ground, but wide and a greater concentration of the beam makes for fantastic detail in the centre of the beam. Lighter weight than the Maxx-D, this light offers the same burn time with slightly lower power. Superb light for cross country night riding.
-
Hope Vision 4 LED Front Light
299.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/1-2010-4-LED-Vision-Universal-UK.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/hope-HLN4LU44UK-med.jpg
- System weight: 415g
- Battery Pack:Yes
- Max power: 960 lm
- Settings: 4
- Charge Time: 6hrs
- Run Time:2:15 - 35Hrs
- RRP: £299.00
Also representing good value, the Vision 4 offers heaps of light and spreads its
960 lumens very well. The beam clearly shows the trail ahead, above and to the sides
clearly. This will be very beneficial on single track or tight and twisty trails.
The range of the beam wasn’t quite as deep as some lights of similar output, meaning
objects in the distance wouldn’t be as clear. Don’t let that put you off though,
as you’d probably need to be travelling at a high velocity to feel like you were
out running the beam. The battery neatly mounts underneath the stem.

Cateye HL-EL920R Sumo 2 High Power
299.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/16-SUMO-2-TWIN-P7-LED-HIGH-POWER-LIGHT.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/cateye-sumo2-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 585g
- Battery Pack: Yes
- Max power: 3500 cd
- Settings: 4
- Charge Time: 5 Hrs
- Run Time: 1.5-35 hrs
- RRP: £299.00
Cateye are well known for their vast range of commuter and high power lights, but not regularly considered by the hardened night rider. Cateye have addressed this with the new Sumo 2. As the name suggests, this light offers a heavyweight beam that takes some challenging. Spread isn’t as even as some lights, with power dying off towards the edges of a wide trail, with a greater concentration of light dead forward. Having said that, when cycling and not critiquing the beam pattern, this is a very useable light. The slight Terminator-esque looks might not be everybody’s taste, and the run-time on high setting is less than desirable, however the unit offers great performance at a very reasonable price.

Moon X-Power 1500 Rechargeable
299.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/8-XP1500-1500-Lumen-Rechargeable-Front-3-XML-LED.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/moon-xp1500-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 408.5
- Battery Pack: Yes
- Max power: 1500 lm
- Settings: 4
- Charge Time: 4 hrs
- Run Time: 2:30-15Hrs
- RRP: £299.00
1500 lumens is a large amount of light. The Moon XP1500 handles this power well
and delivers a great deal of spread enabling even the fastest and demanding off
road riders to ride like the sun is out. The beam isn’t as evenly spread as some
other lights with comparable outputs, with a few shadows here and there, but at
less than £300, Moon have done exceptionally well with this unit.

Exposure MaXx-D Mk4 Front Light
324.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/11-MAXX-D-Mk4.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-maxxd-mk4-med.jpg
- System weight: 337g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 1285 lm
- Settings: 3 Hrs
- Charge Time: 16 Hrs
- Run Time: 3-24 Hrs
- RRP: £324.99
The Maxx-D is a favourite amongst many endure riders who spend up to 24 hours in the saddle tackling the most challenging terrain. The Maxx-D offers plenty of power with a strong, focussed beam offering plenty of range and detail. Ideal for single track, the beam also offers reasonable detail in the peripheral field too. Smaller and lighter than the Six Pack, the Maxx-D has enough power for any riding you can imagine.

Lupine Piko TL Max Front Light
350.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/21-PIKO-TL-MAX-2011.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/lupine-pikotl-max-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 180g
- Battery Pack: N
- Max power: 750 lm
- Settings: 3
- Charge Time: 3 Hrs
- Run Time: 2 Hrs
- RRP: £350.00
The Piko TL is the first light I’ve used from Lupine, that is designed to include the battery within its body, to exclude the need of an external battery pack. This makes the light compete directly with the likes of Exposure. The Piko TL was the most impressive light of the whole bunch in my opinion. The beam was incredibly bright, especially for such a small unit, plus the even spread of beam makes it ideal for fast woodland blasts, technical single track and all the road duties you could possibly require. This light was impressive at all levels and good value-to-performance too.

Exposure Six Pack Mk2 Front Light
449.99
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/12-SIX-PACK-Mk2.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/exposure-six-pack-mk2-med.jpg
- System weight: 478g
- Battery Pack: No
- Max power: 1925 lm
- Settings: 3
- Charge Time: 24 Hrs
- Run Time: 3-24 Hrs
- RRP: £449.99
Almost 2,000 lumens make the Six Pack one of the most powerful lights on this test. The amazing power is spread evenly across, below and above the trail, making it perfect for the more technical and challenging night time riding conditions. 3hrs burn time, but drop the power to the more-than-ample medium setting and you’ll be riding for ten hours between charges. Larger head unit than most, which may put some off, but clean look and massive power makes this an exceptional off road light.

Lupine Wilma 12 Front Light
599.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/4-Wulma-SL-2011.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/lupine-wilma12-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 40g
- Battery Pack: Yes
- Max power: 1.5K lm
- Settings: 5 Watt
- Charge Time: 5:30 Hrs
- Run Time: 5-84Hrs
- RRP: £599.00
Lupine's Wilma 12 is a much smaller unit than the Betty 12. With only 4 LED bulbs,
its 1,500 lumens is plenty of power to cater for any off road trail. The quality
of Lupine is sublime and appeals to the minimalist, although the battery does mount
externally unlike some of the competition who's batteries are included in the head
unit. The beam is focussed and doesn't offer as much detail in the peripheral as
some other lights, such as the Exposure Six Pack where you sacrifice head unit size
for the pleasure. The crisp, pure light is a pleasure to use.

Lupine Betty 12 Front Light
850.00
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/offers/lightingTest/5-Betty-SL-2011.jpg
http://s.wiggle.co.uk/images/lupine-betty-12-light-med.jpg
- System weight: 540g
- Battery Pack: Yes
- Max power: 2.6K lm
- Settings: 5
- Charge Time: 4:45 Hrs
- Run Time: 3:40-84 Hrs
- RRP: £850.00
Lupine is a whole different breed of animal from the other lights here. The Betty
12 in particular is massively bright. The beam picture doesn’t do this light justice.
Its 7 LED bulbs output a staggering 2600 lumens and it feels as such too. The head
unit is kept reasonably compact by having an external battery that fastens to your
top-tube. Don’t stand around for too long though, the head unit builds heat quickly
and is soon too hot to touch. Best keep the power low unless you’re on the move.
At first it seems allot to pay, but you do get what you pay for with this light.
