The new Ultremo racing tire is a massive technological leap forward: Super-light at just 195 g, triple compound as well as a unique protection belt made of Vectran - material used in the US space program - make the tires fast, grippy and puncture resistant.
The newly developed HD-V Guard (High Density Vectran) is - with regard to both puncture protection and weight - the key to a new dimension in the construction of high-quality bicycle tires. At the moment no stronger fabric exists in bicycle tire technology. The Vectran fibres used are twice as tear resistant as titanium and five times stronger than steel. Woven using a patented process the textile has a cut resistance high three times higher than Aramid, which is used, among other things, in bicycle tires and bullet-proof vests. Although strong it is not the fibres, but more accurately the patented weaving technology that makes the difference in puncture protection. The HD-V Guard was developed exclusively with and for Schwalbe. The Vectran fabric also contributes to the tires low weight, as the Ultremos ultra-light protection belt and the super-fine, thinly coated 127 epi carcass helps keep it below the significant 200 gram barrier.
Another innovation is the triple compound that is unique in racing tire technology. The tread has three rubber mixtures. Specially arranged the individual compounds each have a specific advantage. In the tread center there is a hardwearing compound that guarantees durability. On the tire shoulders good grip is required and here the second, uncompromising compound improves wet grip enormously. The third - base - compound has no contact with the road, although it is crucial to the tires acceleration: This compound, which was originally developed for time trials, has extremely low rolling resistance - and so is crucial for speed.
To match the Ultremo competition racing tire Schwalbe has introduced the Ultremo tube. The new tube weighs only 49 grams, around half as much as conventional tubes. Ultremo tube and tyre form an unbeatably light duo with their 49 and 195 gram respective weights.
A highly precise manufacturing process was developed to attain the unusually thin and at the same time consistent wall thickness for this tube. It makes the low weight possible and provides extremely low rolling resistance. Additionally: The Ultremo tube stays inflated longer than a Latex tube. A valve extension made of from light weight aluminum is provided with each tube for assembly on high profile rims.

About Road Race Tyres
These tyres are for racing style bikes that use clincher/hooked rims, these are the most common fitment and hook onto the rim and require an inner tube. There is a wide choice of tyres within this category and the right choice is important. Lighter tyres will accelerate quickly, but will be more prone to punctures so getting a balance is extremely important. If you require a tyre for all round use look for something with puncture protection, an average TPI(Threads Per Inch) and average weight. If you require a fast tyre and speed is the only thing that matters look for a low weight folding tyre with high TPI. If durability is your priority and speed is not so important look towards the puncture resistant tyres and consider going for a wider tyre, these will be less prone to punctures and offer a bit more comfort. For wet road conditions a triple compound or winter tyre is a good choice, these use a softer compound on the cornering surface to maximise grip.
About the Schwalbe brand
For over 70 years Schwalbe have dominated the two wheeled tyre industry in Germany and Europe, being voted best MTB tyre brand in Germany for the past two years. From the very early beginnings where the company founder, Earnest-Wilhelm Bohle capitalised on the developing cycle industry, to the ultra modern distribution facility near Cologne, Schwalbe have continued to design and manufacture some of the finest bicycle tyres available. Schwalbe's success is due in part to the effort it makes in product development from lab tests at the manufacturing facility to the hardest proving grounds of all, professional cycle racing. 'Team Gerolsteiner' achieved a very creditable 7th place overall in the 2004 Tour de France and the unique performance of team captain Davide Rebellin winning three major classic races back to back using Schwalbe tyre. Other notable succeses include Normann Stadler winning the infamous Ironman triathlon in Hawaii, riding Schwalbe Stelvio tyres.
