I am training for a marathon also and I usually take one every half hour of my long runs.If you also take some energy,isotonic drink on your long runs then you might not need to take one as regular.Maybe every 40mins or so.Hope this helps.

aim for 1g carb per kg of body weight per hour and do that in whatever mix of sports drink and gels works best for you. E.g. if you weigh 60kg, 1 SiS gel and 500mL sports drink per hour would see you right and help keep the wall away.
When beginning to eat during long hard runs, just back your pace off for about a minute before starting to eat or drink. The lower heart rate will mean a happier stomach and better metabolism.

they do seem to be close (within months) of the suggested expiry date when they arrive but I hadnt paid any attention. I have found lonely forgotton gels in the bottom of the training bag or car console after 6 months and they are just fine.
