Top Features of the Shimano Dura Ace 7800 Hollowtech II Double Chainset
The Dura-Ace 10-speed crankset is the most visual change in the Dura-Ace component list. From a technical perspective it's the single most advanced component in the new group.
- Road
The new Dura-Ace chainset uses a two-piece design to maximize its stiffness for the optimum power transfer and minimal weight. A hollow cro-moly spindle is press-fitted into the driveside of the Hollowtech II crankarm, this spindle is what rotates in the new external cups, with little or no flex or loss of power. The bottom bracket bearings are now located outside of the bottom bracket shell to accomodate the oversized axle. The bearings are wider apart in comparison to the 9-speed's, this provides more axle support, yet again improving the power transfer. Amazingly though the Q-factor of the new crankset is unchanged from the 9-speed version.
While the cranks themselves look substantially sturdier, when you combine the total weight of chainset and bottom bracket, it saves you 30g in comparison to its 9-speed predecessor. Not only have Shimano improved the crank arms, they have also machined the new rings to be lighter whilst still retaining extremely smooth and precise shifting.
The Dura-Ace advantage has been proven on great road courses of the world.
Dura-Ace road chainsets are available in the following lengths: 165mm, 170mm, 172.5mm, 175mm, 177.5mm, 180mm.
Shimano road chainsets do not include a bottom bracket, you will need to order this seperately in English(68mm) or Italian(70mm) threads to suit your frameset
About Chainsets
Your chainset must fit onto your bottom bracket! There are currently four chainset/bottom bracket interfaces that you're likely to come across. If your bottom bracket is made by Shimano and it has splines, then you need an Octalink chainset. If your b/b is NOT made by Shimano and it has splines, it's almost certainly ISIS. There are a very few non-Shimano chainsets with Shimano Octalink interfaces so, to be sure, count the splines - ISIS has 9, Octalink has (surprise, surprise) 8. No matter which brand of b/b you have, if it has a square interface, it will require a traditional square taper chainset. If you have one of the new Hollowtech II systems, you will need to choose the exact chainset that matches your bottom bracket. Most MTB chainsets are now 9-speed compatible but these will work with an 8-speed system.
