Shimano has raised the bar to a new level of performance with the development of a hollow outer chainring, giving vast improvements in rigidity and increased weight savings.
For 2009 Shimano have totally redesigned the Dura Ace FC-7900 crankset, both in looks and performance. The crank arms now flow into the rings and they have added a stealthy black finish, but this is not just for looks, the outer chainring is now hollow. This hollow design does more than shave weight, the hollow chainring and re-shaped crankarms make the FC-7900 and 7950(compact version) a full 20% stiffer than the FC-7800. Another added benefit to Shimano's hollow arms and rings are weight saving, you save a further 15g over the older model whilst also benefiting from a crisper front change due to the increased lateral ring stiffness.
Another issue Shimano have thought greatly about with the new Dura Ace 7900 chainset is the reduction of mechanical drag. The chain and cassette have been redesigned to work together with a new level of performance, the teeth on the FC-7900 and FC-7950 chainrinsg have been re-profiled to deliver Shimano's most efficient chain contact. Lets face it, come race day every watt you produce counts, so why waste it? The new precise fit between chain and chainring helps to eliminate needless loss of power through transmission drag. It also has the added benefit of making your drivetrain extremely smooth and quiet.

About Chainsets
Your chainset must fit onto your bottom bracket! There are currently four chainset/bottom bracket interfaces that you're likely to come across. If your bottom bracket is made by Shimano and it has splines, then you need an Octalink chainset. If your b/b is NOT made by Shimano and it has splines, it's almost certainly ISIS. There are a very few non-Shimano chainsets with Shimano Octalink interfaces so, to be sure, count the splines - ISIS has 9, Octalink has (surprise, surprise) 8. No matter which brand of b/b you have, if it has a square interface, it will require a traditional square taper chainset. If you have one of the new Hollowtech II systems, you will need to choose the exact chainset that matches your bottom bracket. Most MTB chainsets are now 9-speed compatible but these will work with an 8-speed system.

Magazine reviews for Shimano Dura Ace 7950 Hollowtech II Compact Chainset
Review from road.cc
The hollow forged alloy crank (after flirting with carbon, Shimano Dura-Ace cranks are now fully alloy again) is matched up with a hollow outer chainring to produce a crankset that's a tad (15g) lighter than before. It's also said to be 20% stiffer although, in use, you'll do well to notice. Even if you're a big rider pushing a big gear, the difference is tiny - but, hey, everything helps so we're not going to argue. If you really want to get out your anorak and magnifying glass, you can take a look at the slightly altered tooth shape which is designed to give better contact and power transfer. The crankset comes in a whole range of chainring size options including, for the first time, a 50-34T compact design for a lower set of gear ratios.
In conclusion...
Lighter and stiffer than ever with a compact option adding to the appeal
Rating: 9/10
Review from Cycling Plus
The cold-forged aluminium alloy Dura-Ace crankset comes with a new hollowed out chainring. The chainring bolts slot through the inner chainring and screw directly through the spider and into the outer chainring. Shimano claim this design is 20 percent stiffer than any of their previous cranks.
The tooth profiles on the chainrings have been redesigned to reduce wear and improve efficiency, not only when shifting, but also when transferring power from the chainring to the chain.
The bottom bracket has stainless steel bearing units as usual, but with new seals with less drag than previous versions. The chainset weighs in at 739g, including bearings.
On the road this is one of the stiffest feeling cranksets we've ever ridden. Only Cannondale's Hollowgram SI system and the THM Clavicula cranks are comparable in terms of how stiff they feel when pedalling.
In conclusion...
One of the stiffest chainsets we've ever ridden
Rating: 9/10
