A bicycle chain is a 'roller chain' that has the task of transferring power from the cranks to the rear wheel of the bike thus propelling it. Most bicycle chains are made from alloy steel, but some are chrome plated or stainless steel to prevent rust, or simply for good looks. Chains will vary in width depending on the amount of gears you have, most are 3/32 inch for use with geared systems and then come in 'speeds' which needs to matched to the cassette, ie a 10 speed cassette will need a 10 speed chain and so on. Track bikes or single speeds often run 1/8 inch rings so will need a 1/8 inch chain as well, these will have larger plates to aid stopping on a fixed wheel, which can add extra stress to a chain.

Magazine reviews for Shimano HG70 7/8 Speed Chain
Review from Cycling Plus
The HG70 (as in Shimano Hyperglide) is compatible with Shimano 7 and 8 speed systems. This means it is suitable for 1999 105 drivetrains and earlier as well as 8-speed Deore and LX mountain bike drivetrains. As you'd expect it works best when itegrated with Shimano systems. The 7 and 8 speed compatibility means the chain's going to be more common on older bikes but it's a small price to pay for a replacement chain that works well. It uses Shimano's special joining pins, there are two supplied with the chain.
Old but still going strong
Product Q & A
Ask your questions and share your answers.
Why should I choose one over another? I have just replaced my freewheel with a new Shimano MF TZ21 7-speed, by the way. I have a 2300 triple at the front and a long-cage circa 2000 vintage Altus RD at the back.
They both come with a proper powerlink connector that works!
The Shimanos come with a useless pin mechanism that requires the work of the devil to fit.
A) Would a Shimano HG70 cassette and a HG70 chain be suitable?
B) Is it likely that the ratchet in the freehub is actually at fault?
C) Should I also replace the front chainrings too (middle is worn, others are ok)?
However I would recommend contacting your local cycle shop for further analysis.
