What does your extra tenner get you over the Shimano M520s? Well, they're a wee bit lighter and everything just feels a bit better quality out of the box, and there are no spanner flats on the cro-mo spindles so they tighten onto the crank with an allen key out back, looking neater as a result. Apart from that, it's more or less the same pedal, the same gappy mud-friendlier design, the same Shimano float and release feel. You either do or you don't really.

In conclusion...

Affordable, tidy looking, and reassuringly durable

Almost identical to the XT pedal but made slightly cheaper due to lower quality bearings and hence a few grams heavier. But even that extra few (four!) grams does push this pedal to the top of the weight list for non-platformed pedals. But for the chunkiness you do get the same super-quick engagement and lovely positive release as the XT, just in a reversed colour scheme.

In conclusion...

A beefy pedal but for the money it works briliantly and indistinguishable from the XT.

Why did I wait so long? Having been put off spds by some cheap pedals and shoes I bought a couple of years ago (problems clipping in AND out), I thought I'd give them another try. Now with dhb shoes and these shimanos I just wish I'd bought them years ago. Still being a little tentative I have them on the slackest setting but there is still reassuring click when engaged and as yet no accidental unclipping. I noticed the difference straight away, feeling a alot more connected to the bike, especially on climbs. Brilliant! 11 July 2010

Good solid product I have been using these pedals on my mtb for about a year now and they have stood up to the job well. Nice sturdy product and the spindles are still nice and smooth even after some dirty off toad winter rides. Would defo buy them again as I am well pleased with them both in looks and performance. 21 June 2012

Excellent Pedals I had lower end Shimano clipless pedals prior to these. The 540s are much better, providing positive feedback (solid click) when engaged and easy to get in and out of with the supplied cleats. I did not need to adjust anything, just used them as is with the factory settings for cleat tightness. The bonus is these pedals are lighter than the ones which were replaced. 12 May 2012

I have a few bikes and have these pedals on all my bikes would not use anything else,for the slightly extra cost of the 540 over the 520 there is just no contest 17 April 2012

The M540 pedals are lighter and have a simplified built quality making them lighter and more reliable. They both use sealed bearings and Chromoly axles so the difference is small but noticable over the life of the pedal.

Yes, the SPD's are silver around the outside and top of the pedal. There is a small strip of black that runs down the inside of the pedal which connects to the crank arm.

No reason not to. They are fine on a road bike. I use them myself as they are better for walking with when of the bike. Road cleats which stand proud of the shoe can be very slippery on some surfaces off the bike. Any recessed cleats (like on most MTB shoes) will be better for walking.

Are these compatible with SH56 cleats?

My MTB has M324's using SH56 cleats as I like the ability to get out in a panic (to prevent a nasty fall). I'd like to use these on my MTB but retain the get out in all directions of the SH56 as opposed to the SH51's twist sideways to get out.
